I have been a member here for a few months, I joined to learn more about the Catholic faith. My husband and sons are Catholic and I plan to convert someday. I have observed and read and learned quite a lot on the boards here. I must admit I have been surprised at the ferocity of feelings about homosexuality. I haven’t previously thought of it as something that could possibly be considered evil. But I am taking time to read and think and consider.

My question is, for those of you who are truly concerned that there is evil in the social breakdown of the culture and family in our lives, why do we not address the evil that occurs on a daily and weekly basis in every home, every town, every parish? I was raised Protestant, and was carefully taught in Sunday School and Confirmation etc. I learned my Ten Commandments. The second commandment is thou shalt not take the name of The Lord your God in vain. The third is, observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy.

The days are over when Sunday was a real day of rest. Now everyone and everything is out and about shopping, working, gambling, drinking, cutting the grass, watching sports or playing sports, behaving completely as usual. In fact, most parishioners in our church are still chewing the host and walk right out to the parking lot. I find it very disrespectful.

Since my children were born I have made a conscious effort to stop saying oh my god, but I am sorry to say up until that point it came out of my mouth all day every day. Everyone I knew cursed with the name of The Lord…I cringe even to type it.

I am not saying that the point of view on homosexuality needs to be debated on this thread. I don’t want it to be  instead, I wonder if at some point there may be prayer groups and attention from the Pope and full on effort from the Church to address the fact that many, many, many people are in full disobedience of two of His commandments all the time.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, as it’s been on my mind. 🙂 be kind to me lol, I am a newbie and I am not a savvy CAF poster.

Your concern is very valid. There are many people, even within the ranks of the Church, who have lost a sense of reverence for God and what is holy. It is one more thing to teach on our To-Do lists.
However, we are up against a whole myriad of moral issues and we must address all of them. The reason why homosexuality and the degradation of the family are hotter topics is because there are many opposing us so it appears on the secular media more often, and they touch more on laws and legislation so that the Church must take a more public approach to the issue.
Besides the bringing back the sanctity of marriage, we ought also to reinstill a sense of reverence.

Yes, you are correct about the everyday evils. Actually, in my experience, those are the topic of most homilies. I hardly ever hear homosexuality discussed in church. The only reason it is a big topic on the Forums is because of the current push for same sex marriage, which in the view of many, threatens the foundations of family and society.

And just my opinion, but if you wish to learn about Catholicism, probably the best places to peruse would be the “Ask An Apologist” forum or to look over the main page at catholic.com. After all, most of the forums are just a bunch of regular Catholics offering personal opinions and arguments. (Plus, those places cause fewer spikes in blood pressure.)
