What she is saying is that we shouldn’t view the church as something to please us, and we shouldn’t look for a parish that conforms to us and our likes. It feeds a negative attitude, that church is about the parishioner and not about God.

Having a “parish shopping mentality” is bad. It implies that one is looking for a church to please himself. With that said, it’s perfectly okay, and Michelle will agree, to look for a different parish if the current one is lacking or is rampant with abuse that fosters a bad atmosphere that does not reflect Catholic morals and theology.
 
:confused: I thought we can be part of any Parish we want as long as we attend Sunday Mass.
 
We can. I never said we couldn’t. I was just implying that, as people are different, so will be Catholic churches. Some will be more strict than others in teaching, theology and morals. All I said was is that it’s fine to go find another parish to attend if the one you are currently attending is weak or wrong on the teaching, theology and morals side, and that is what Michelle was saying. But in the process, you shouldn’t develop an “I will go to whatever church pleases me most, and only because of that” attitude. If you don’t want to change churches even if yours is lacking in spiritual substance, you don’t have to. You can very well attend any Catholic church you want to in order to fulfill your obligation.

Seeing that parishes are not identical, I don’t see anything wrong with choosing a parish with the right mix of a beautiful and liturgically correct mass, instructive homilies, caring priests and ministries that you can volunteer your time for.

That’s if you are looking to have an active parish life rather than going to the mass and then rushing to the parking lot after.

Yeah, and neither do I. But, I’m just saying, you shouldn’t base your decision ONLY on beautiful liturgy. Beautiful can still be weak theologically and morally, although that usually isn’t the case.

🙂 i look more at how the priest communicates. At the Parish I attend he speaks much about mercy. The music isnt fun to be honest.
 
Actually, you are supposed to attend mass in the parish in which you live. Not saying I do, I’m just sayin’…

I don’t think that is true anymore. I have had several priests tell me that. Something about sthe 1983 code of Canon law.

Michelle’s answer indicated that the problem may arise when someone “continually” switches parishes in a quest to find the perfect one.

There is nothing wrong with checking out a few parishes to find the best fit or with visiting parishes other than your own from time to time. But “parish shopping” creates two problems.
  1. If you are continually changing parishes, you don’t get to become part of the parish community. You won’t be very involved in meaninful ministries if you keep leaving.
  2. The “parish shopping” experience is very self-centered. It treats the parish as a consumer product with us as the customer to be pleased. No parish is perfect and it doesn’t help if someone leaves and goes elsewhere everytime something happens that isn’t perfect.
 
With my work schedule, it is hard to go to the church nearest to my home.

I find it easier to attend one that is 5 minutes drive on my way home from work for Saturday evening Mass. I am not worried about participating in a lot of things at it because of my work schedule is not the best at times but at least I am thankful to be employed. I sometimes go to my childhood church if I cannot make it in time to the church 5 minutes drive (and be on time) on the way home from work as many people there still know me & vice versa.

I would go to EF Masses more often if they were local to me but the closest one is 20 miles away on a Sunday afternoon, and even without traffic on the expressway is 30 minutes drive, and I cannot get out of work on time unless I request time off ahead of time to go to it. I have gone to others out of town on either my scheduled days off work or using pre-requested time off.

An elderly woman in my neighborhood yelled at me for going to Mass at a Church other than the local Parish. Still going by the old days lol
