Do other Christian religions make sacrifices (e.g. give up a favorite food) during lent or is that strictly a catholic thing?
Lutherans practice fasting during lent…it’s not considered obligatory by the church itself, but most Lutherans that I know do practice it. Also, the pastors at my church have encouraged it. I’ve known some non-denominational Christians to practice this as well.Do other Christian religions make sacrifices (e.g. give up a favorite food) during lent or is that strictly a catholic thing?
I agree. My best friend is pentecostal, and she pretty much treated my fast as if it was total craziness and was totally un-supportive. She didn’t even try understand it when I was explaining the spirituality and significance that it has for me. Fasting is crazy, yet speaking in tongues is normal? I don’t get it.It’s sometimes fashionable for Evangelicals and non-denoms to observe Lent, but most fundamentalists and at least the pentecostal denomination I grew up in absolutely do not. I remember someone reacting with the same horror when another person gave them a book about lenten practices as if it were a book on witchcraft.
No I understand completely as that is one of the things I gave up for lent. For me, it is not just a Catholic thing, as I am not Catholic and I observe Lent. I try to give up my most “cherished” which, this year, is wine. Unless you are a connoisseur you would not understand the sacrifice.
I love to do it, I love the discipline it causes me to realize I have, and I love the 7 pounds of weight I shed. If the Catholics first recognized Lent, God bless them!
