Ottawa archbishop rejects human rights group over abortion ties

A Canadian archbishop has judged that a Mexican human rights center, which received support from the Canadian Church’s Development and Peace initiative, has taken an approach that is “incompatible” with Catholic teaching by supporting groups that promote abortion.

The Miguel Pro Center for Human Rights’ “support of groups in favor of abortion rights in Mexico is incompatible with the Church’s defense of the right to life from conception to natural death, and the mission of Development and Peace,” according to an April 1 notification from the office of Ottawa Archbishop Terrence T. Prendergast.

The priest who runs the center was scheduled to deliver a series of fund raising appeals at parishes throughout the archdiocese. The official international aid organization of the Catholic Church in Canada, which is called Development and Peace, had arranged for Fr. Arriaga’s appearances.

Pro-life activists in Canada have criticized the Pro Center since 2009. Last year, after an inquiry, the Catholic bishops appeared to exonerate the organization of serious wrong-doing.

After investigating the charges, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops denied that the Development and Peace campaign had “aided projects related to the promotion of abortion,” although it acknowledged that the Pro Center had been “imprudent in signing a United Nations report on the human rights situation in Mexico that included orientations not in accord with Catholic teaching.”

Father Luis Arriaga, director of Centro Prodh (the Miguel Pro Centre) in Mexico City needs to make a public statement on this matter and get the controversy cleared up.
