The reality of our sins begins to sink in our hearts when we think of Christ hanging on the Cross.
Can you imagine the pain and anguish he went through for us. I always think Christ’ pain is because of my sin and I always pray and hope to sin no more.
It makes me cringe to think of Jn.19 but when we read further it brings joy to my heart to know Jesus is victorious once again. Jn.20

I don’t think there is any way to convince a pseudo-skeptic that the use of Ouija boards can act as both an occasion for sin and a doorway to spiritual attack (beyond actually conjuring up a demon from hell before their eyes).

It’s pretty much a self-fulfilling prophecy for the solidly closed minded. The faithful Christian isn’t going to demonstrate demons exist or recommend that the skeptical find out for themselves that such beings do exist (either through self experimentation with occult or by going to someone that dabbles in it). Hence, we see such questions about Ouija boards and other occult practices posed here. It’s pretty much a safe bet that a pseudo-skeptic’s views will not be easily intellectually challenged with solid proof (especially since testimonies are usually dismissed as being unreliable).

This is one of those topics where a skeptic has to have experienced a spiritual attack to believe such things can happen.

I’m sorry, are you referring to my friend in the first paragraph, or the roommate in the second?

If the second, then I have no contact with him. I only did one tour in the Corps back in '79-'82, and then I was only roommates with him for a short period. Back then I was a Fundamental Baptist.

If you are referring to my friend in the first paragraph, he only has interest in demonology because he has been put in situations where knowledge of it is necessary. He is a strong devout Christian Catholic man, but does understand the reality of the other side. His job as a deputy watching inmates also gives him exposure to some pretty bizzare things. In my estimation he has nothing to repent from. It’s not like he is actually calling up spirits or demons, just learning about their habits and how to deal with them.

If a person had this ‘sight’ might that sort of thing be a gift of the Holy Spirit? The scriptures do say that we’re all given a different spiritual gift to be used to edify the church.

Also, yeah… Personally, I don’t it’s a good idea for anyone to be using a Ouija board. It’s not likely to lead to anything but trouble. Magic 8 ball is just a toy, but if you’re seriously using it to try and tell the future, then you’d probably run into the area of idolatry.

Satan does pose as an Angel of Light. He and his dominions prefer to operate in stealth, remain hidden or cloak themselves than to have their true nature be shown or exposed. The so called ‘gift’ is demonic spirit operating behind the scenes to make it appear as though it is legitimate to deceive and delude others. It is passed through successive generations because some ancestor was involved in occultic ritual or practices. They are called familiar spirits as they can provide the most intimate information about the decease and even imitate their voice to fool many. Just read the lives of past saints to know the reality of these demons.

Make no mistake such practices are condemned by the Catholic Church. Such practices are considered a sin of divination. It opens a door to eventual demonic possession or oppression. It gives demonic forces a legitimate claim over that person.

Having been involved in many exorcisms in the past with various parish priests, association with so called harmless games or practices of wanting to know the future or other information is never harmless and it is something you would never ever want to indulge in nor be around people who do.

If you want to know more about it then there is an excellent book on the subject entitled Hostage to the Devil by theologian Father Malachai Martin. Discovery channel has a series of actual documented cases of demonic activity in a series called “The Haunting”. However, use discernment when watching as some cases involve exorcisms of people and houses by priests, others are easily fooled by familiar spirits masquerading themselves as past relatives. You can tell they are demonic spirits as every experience involves fear or violence or a combination of both.

I’d like to ask a question in this regard. If this is something passed through generations, wouldn’t it be unfair to impose condemnations upon people who inherited it since something of this hereditary nature is not something you can reject freely?

I second the opinion recommending “Hostage to the Devil” by Fr. Malachi Martin. It is a terrifying read, more so because it is a true acount of demonic possessions.

As I recall, there is an episode recounted therein. A young person has become possessed. A Protestant Minister interviews the possessed and concludes it is a bona fide possession. His advice to the family of the possessed? Almost verbatim it was, “you need to see the Catholics. The Catholics know about things like this.”

No Christian should have anything to do with a ouija board. Nothing good comes from using one. NOTHING.
