On this Mother’s Day, I can’t help but think about our Blessed Mother Mary, and how grateful I am that she is there to intercede for us, and how powerful the rosary is as a devotion and prayer. I tend to do the rosary often anyway, but today I joined the Confraternity of the Rosary and just wanted to post the link in case anyone is interested who has not already heard of this.
And even outside of confraternity, what a gift to our sweet holy mother it would be for us to pray the rosary on this day.

Blessings,
Cherub

I don’t get it.

I thought the rosary was all about Christ, and the Hail Mary was asking for her prayers to God on our behalf.

How could this be a gift to the Blessed Virgin?

Hi Michael!

The Rosary is about Christ. Through it, we meditate on the Life of Jesus. A article in The Catholic Registor a few years ago had this to say, I think it captures the essence of the Rosary beautifully:

“When you pray the rosary,it’s like you’re taking hte hand of Christ and walking through His Life with Him and His Mother, Mary. And She, so close to Him, had quite a spectacular view.”

And we do ask Mary to pray for us, to intercede for us to God on our behalf.
I remember reading somewhere (a catholic source) that God has given Mary special graces to then give to us, through Her Son, Jesus. The Rosary is one of them I think. Just think of Our Lady of Grace- notice how there are streams of light coming from her fingertips, they represent (according to literature I have read about the history of Our Lady of Grace) the graces that she has been given by God to give to us.

Hopefully this helps!
God Bless!
Jade.

How does a mother feel when her son is honored?

I suppose great! Using that type of logic one can use any prayers to Christ for the purpose. So why the rosary?

Let’s put it another way: the rosary is like a litany, it basically says “pray for me” 150 times, plus the meditations (which some people omit).

So if I was to think, “gee, it’s your birthday (anniversary, graduation), I think I’ll do something nice for you. I’ll send you an email that says…pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “gimme” “gimme” “gimme” “gimme” “gimme” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” “pray for me” 150 times. I’m sure you’ll like it!

That’s basically what a rosary is, it’s a prayer-mail to the BVM asking for her prayers on our own behalf. It’s not an honorific or anything like that. It hardly seems like a gift.

And to my way of thinking, the virgin is not interested in special recognition. She is supposed by us to be spotless, free of sin, humble and not prideful.

And what can you give the gal who has everything?

Well if they omit the meditation then the aren’t praying the rosary.

Take that up with her, seams that she likes it, otherwise she wouldn’t have wasted her time at Fatima.

How can you have so many posts here and not know what the Holy Rosary is? Do you not know that it has been revealed by the Blessed Virgin Mary in approved apparitions that reciting the rosary faithfully pleases her greatly? Rosary means “garland of roses.” Each time we recite the rosary and meditate on the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord, we give to Mary, Queen of Heaven, a spiritual bouquet of roses. God has given graces to her care, to bestow upon us and to intercede for us, and in her humility and obedience, she desires what He has willed: that we come to her and seek those graces she keeps always at the ready for us, her children, for the love and sake of her son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Sure, I know what the rosary is! 😃

This sounds like an example of quaint mythologizing. One is not required to believe in these apparitions, and there is always a danger of going “over the top” with them. Nevertheless, you are free to believe it if you wish. I still maintain that she is too humble to care about such things.
God has given graces to her care, to bestow upon us and to intercede for us, and in her humility and obedience, she desires what He has willed: that we come to her and seek those graces she keeps always at the ready for us, her children, for the love and sake of her son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
This goes without saying.

Hi Michael,
I can see your viewpoint, but, respectfully I think you miss the point of the rosary just a bit. 😉

Everytime we say the Hail Mary while meditating on the mysteries of the life of Christ and his beloved Mother we are reciting the very words from scripture… “Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of they womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen”

We are giving praise to the angels’ revelation that Mary was chosen by God to be the Mother of God and in her “Yes” the Holy Spirit came upon her and thus was conceived in her womb “the word Incarnate” Our Lord Jesus Christ and we have the words of Mary’s cousin Elizabeth upon hearing Mary’s greeting in arriving at her home as well.

I don’t see how in repeating the “Hail Mary” while meditating on the appropriate Mystery, which is honoring the gift of salvation to the world through “the word Incarnate” that was conceived in Mary’s womb is JUST about only wanting to please Mary.

We are giving HONOR to the “word made Flesh”… the word “Incarnate” in every Hail Mary.

I can see how many would see the rosary as a prayer of repetition, but, the rosary is layer upon layer of mystery, like a mystical fruit that you have to peel all the layers off of to get to the juicy spiritual PULP. 😉

In the Orthodox traditions you also have repeated prayers… such as the Jesus Prayers’ “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner” on the prayer rope called a Chotki (which some Orthodox also use special prayers to the Virgin Mary as well) and the Coptic Orthodox who use the 41-bead Mequteria in remembrance of the Scourging of Our Lord, as well as a 64 bead Mequteria which is used for special prayers to the Virgin Mary for the 64 years of Mary’s life. As it is in the Coptic tradition, Mary lived to this age and the Holy Family stayed in Egypt (mainly Upper Egypt=Southern Egypt).

They have a rich tradition concerning “The Holy Family” and special places in Egypt that many Copts even today visit in honor of the Holy Family. (I will have to ask my Coptic friend for the exact prayers for Mary in the “Coptic language”)

Ok, I have written ALOT… and forgive my using a “mystical fruit” as an example… It may seem corny to some, but, makes sense in my heart.

I hope this helps you to see Michael, that Catholics are not alone in giving honor to Mary and what may seem on the surface as repetitious, has a great mystical meaning at its depths that is a treasure of unmeasurable value.

God bless all 😃 😃
