We address YHWH Sabaot as Abba, quite a familiar address for the Lord God of Hosts. But it would feel strange in prayer to address Jesus as Big Bro’. I usually call him Lord. I wonder what Mary calls him in her affection for him?

This is what Mary say to Him in her affection.

My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me; and holy is His name. And His mercy is from generation to generations, to them that fear Him. He hath showed might in His arm; He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat; and hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empy away. He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy. As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever.

You need to read your bible again. The Magnificat is said in the presence of the angel announcing her pregnancy. She is addressing God, not her son.

My, you do have an interesting view of theology.

Be careful of ever saying anything about the liberals being “cafeteria Catholics”, as you like to pick and choose what you accept, too.

Really this is rather interesting - as a Catholic I believe in the Holy Trinity! … meaning - By the Blessed Trinity we mean one and the same God in three divine Persons.

Unaided by divine revelation, the human mind could not know the existence of the Blessed Trinity because it is a supernatural mystery.

you may find it interesting but I assure you it is as old as time!

You will not find any argument here - I am a firm believer that the visible Catholic Church is a pick and choose religion … meaning it is no longer ONE - And I have picked and choosen exactly what I want!!! - The one the makes Saints.

Rara Avis:

I suspect that what Mary called Jesus would be what most affectionate mothers called their son, including most affectionate names.

Your biggest problem seems to be that you cannot get your mind (or your feelings) around the fact that Jesus was as much a human as we are, except in sin. That means he sweated, he needed a bath, he probably caught colds and the flu, he stubbed his toe, and he probably needed a bandaid or two (except that they hadn’t yet been invented).

Your problem in calling him “brother” belies an over emphasis on his divinity, to the point of making his humanity some sort of super-humanity, or something to be ignored.

He was both human and divine, two natures neither overshadowing the other. There will always be tension between the two; we call it a mystery.

You may be a pick and chooser, but the visible Church, through its visible Magisterium is the final arbiter of truth, not you. Playing pick and choose puts you into the same category of those you so roundly condemn, and leaves your protestations hollow at best.

And I suspect your biggest problem lies in your inability to actually comprehend what God made man really means.

God became man for love of us, but what does it avail us if we do not understand this love?
God, the infinite, Immense, Eternal, all-powerful God, the mighty Creator, the God that fills Heaven with His Majesty, hid all His power, His Majesty, His greatness, and became a little child in order to become like us and so to gain our love.
He entered into the pure womb of the Virgin Mary and there lay hidden for nine whole months. Then He was born in a stable between two animals. he was poor and humbled. He passed 33 years working, suffering, praying, teaching His beautiful Religion, working miracles, doing good to all. He did all this to prove His love for each of us and so constrain us to love Him.
This stupendous act of love was so great that not even the highest Angels in Heaven could have conceived it possible, had not God revealed it to them.
It was so great that the Jews, God’s chosen people, who were expecting a Saviour, were scandalized at the thought that God could humble Himself so much.
The Gentile philosophers, notwithstanding their vaunted wisdom, said that it is madness to think that the Almightly God could do so much for love of man.
St. Paul says that God exhausted all His power, wisdom and goodness in becoming man for us: “He emptied Himself out”
Our Lord confirms the words of the Apostle, for He says: “What more could I do?”
Your problem in calling him “brother” belies an over emphasis on his divinity, to the point of making his humanity some sort of super-humanity, or something to be ignored.
There can NEVER be enough emphasis on His divinity - That is an absolute!!! He HUMBLED himself to become man… Think about it!!!

I have thought about it. However, so have some heretics in the past, those who put so much emphasis on His divinity that they denied and/or denigrated His humanity. It is not either/or, it is both/and.

If the emphasis on Christ’s divinity so clouds our understanding of him that we cannot call Him brother, then at that point there is too much emphasis on His divinity.

I have only heard “savior”, and I’m pretty sure that is what the Latin translates to. I don’t care what brother means in an eastern culture- we’re not an eastern culture, and here, brother implies equality. Jesus became one of us, yes, but we are praying to God the Father here- The Son and the Father are one, but this prayer is specifically directed to the Father in the Trinity.

I feel more comfrotable thinking fo Jesus as Lord, but he did say let us pray "our" Father and did not specify my father, when speaking about lifting our voices in prayer, although he did refer to God as his father at many other times. He did also say in the gospel that all who embrace his message are his *mother *and brothers.

Yes this is very correct - there is way too much of this type of thinking -

This down play has been going on for far to many years.

Yes we remember the God of Mercy … put conveinently fail to acknowledge the God of Justice.

We think that God is so loving He became our brother - But God above all is Almightly, infinate, Divine Wisdom and we are not worthly for the honour He has bestowed upon us.

Mass is a ‘celebration’ but totally forget or refuse to acknowledge “The Divine Sacrific”

The Head of our Church wears a crown of thorns but most would prefer to see a different Jesus … one not so harsh to look at.

Most choose the lovey dovey - wishy washy approach - which is nothing but empty sap with the Truth … And the Truth is what makes Saints.
