Our families: addictions & mental illness

Please join me in praying for my family and yours, those that are dealing with addictions, especially to alcohol and drugs, and those who struggle with mental and emotional illness (which is often the start of the cycle of addiction). My brother just died of cyrrhosis of the liver after years of self-medicating his lifelong anxiety and depression with beer. His spiritual struggles were part of his struggles with alcohol. At the end, he realized the connection with alcohol and stopped completely. He asked for his old crucifix to be hung in his room. It simply must have been his time since everything on the surface looked like a full recovery, according to his doctors and therapists.

He leaves behind a daughter who was sucked into the drug culture at a moment of psychosis and despair. Pray for my brother’s soul; pray for his daughter; and pray for all of us that we can see the way clearly for those who are in the dark and help lead them back to safety and sanity.

Pray that we can intervene earlier in children’s lives before they become overwhelmed. Pray that society starts to value sober realities more than escapes in a bottle, joint, pill, or needle. Pray that young men and women learn to value their lives, minds, bodies, and avoid exploitation by others.

Please pray that my family and yours can learn from his death and cope better with their lives. In the name of Jesus Christ.

Heavenly Father, we bring before you the sorrow and sadness posted by AuntieA. When we look around we see so many lives affected by substance abuse, and Lord, the adults suffer, and the little ones suffer so much from it in so many ways, and then they grow up to make the same mistakes. Lord be with this family and help them to seek you and turn away from substances that destroy the body you gave them. Help them to turn to you for their emotional wellness. Help the family to draw together and help the children left behind. Father be with them. Comfort them. Love them, help them.

Mary Mother of God, Saint Joseph, help this family. Help all our families.

I am sorry to hear about your brother. I will pray for his soul. I will also pray for all your family and all familes who are afflicted with these diseases. It is so sad. I agree that our young people need to be addressed regarding their emotional state before an addiction becomes apparent. Praying for you, dear one.

Praying very hard…I have family members that are in active addictions and a few who suffer from mental illness. Life isn’t easy, that’s for sure.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

Ladies, I too join in these beautiful prayers for Auntie A’s family, and all families suffering the painful, and sorrowful effects of substance abuse. May God be with us all! :gopray:

Praying with you, my son suffers from mental illness and feels desperate at times, so i pray for all people going through their own kind of hell :signofcross:

Unfortunately… too many of us have family members who have addictions and/or mental illness. I know that their are way too many in my family and I thank God each and every day that my children have not taken that path.

I will join you in prayer for your family, my family, and the family members of all here on the forum.

God have mercy on them.
 
Lord Jesus, please break the chains of addictions that keep our loved ones from you. Please set them free so that they may enjoy your peace and love, something which they search for in places where it will never be found.

Help us to remember those with addictions in our chaplets of Divine Mercy.

Auntie A Your brother and your faimly will be in my prayers. I am going through the same thing with my husband and I pray everyday he will be helped also. It is a terrible thing to watch. I will try to keep everyone on this board in my prayers. You are not alone.-----Prayerfully,sprouts

I feel incredibly lifted and braver by all of your comments and prayers and wish you a Happy Easter despite any heaviness in my heart.

I continue to pray for our families: that we can deepen our faith despite outward sadness and deepen our understanding of our addicted and mentally ill so that we can be present when they need our help back to sanity and sobriety.

I nearly gave up on my brother but now I am so glad that I did not give up on him. His last year, although he was sick and distressed , he was more open to God and more gentle, kind and open than ever to others. God is merciful.

Sounds to me that your brother is probably now better positioned to pray for me!!! Nevertheless, may his soul and all souls through God’s Mercy rest in His Peace. Keeping his daughter in prayer too…as well as all who suffer from any form of addiction and/or mental distress…
