Are there any approved musical settings for the Our Father during the OF of the mass that change the words. We sang something tonight at the Vigil Mass where the words “for the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever” seemed to be absent in part or in whole. It wasn’t any of the Our Father’s I know and I sang in St. Mary’s choir for over 30 years and now that I am attending St. Paul’s things sure are different. I know that there are different sung masses but they don’t alter the words do they? 🙂

I’d ask the choir director and/or the priest. I am not the most knowledgeable on this subject, but here is the little I do know…

The last part “for the kingdom…etc” is not originally part of the actual Lord’s Prayer, if my research is correct. There was a saying that the “original Christians” of the time would say afterwards. Later on, they added it into the King James bible that most protestants use (and they think is the word-for-word right). After going back to the original texts they realized that it wasn’t in the writings, so it’s often with an * and footnote.

I know in the wedding mass done for my husband and I a month ago, they did not say the last part- the priest didn’t say his part either. We just ended with “Deliver us from evil.”

So I wonder if it is required, as it is not necessarily part of the prayer? Or maybe the person who wrote the music just didn’t write that part- it’d be easy enough to write out another bar or two of music with that part added, should the priest and choir director ok it.

This is just my thoughts- by far not necessarily correct. 🤷

I was mistaken, the phrase I spoke of is said after the priest says:

“Deliver us Lord from every evil, blah blah…”

I think I would like to know irregardless of the musical setting can any of the words of the Our Father be omitted or changed. I don’t see how, otherwise it wouldn’t be the Our Father.🙂

No. This is what Redemptionis Sacramentum states about the parts of the Mass as a whole:
[59.] The reprobated practice by which Priests, Deacons or the faithful here and there alter or vary at will the texts of the Sacred Liturgy that they are charged to pronounce, must cease. For in doing thus, they render the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy unstable, and not infrequently distort the authentic meaning of the Liturgy.
Now, there are parts in the Roman Missal that indicate that the celebrant may use “these or similar words”. However, the “Deliver us Lord” prayer does not fall into that category.

That part is called the Embolism.
