Our Lady as Star of the Ocean

The famous and beautiful Ave Maris Stella calls Mary the Star of the Ocean.

Could someone explain to me where that title originated? I understand it’s ancient, but don’t understand what makes her eligible to take that name?
 
In this world we are like a ship on a storm tossed ocean. Just as a sailor looks to the stars to safely lead the ship to port, Mary is the star that will guide us safely to our heavenly home.
