"Our Lady of the Atonement" Medal (?)

I have a medal that I’m trying to identify.

I’d post a pic, but my scanner is not hooked up yet, so I must describe.

It’s copper, kind of almond-shaped, about 1-1/2" high and 1" across. On the obverse is a crowned figure of Our Lady, holding the Holy Infant in her arms. Around her head are clustered 9 stars.

There is an inscription: from about the 8:00 position to the top, it says “Our Lady of the”; at the very top is a stylized fleur-de-lys; and from there to approximately 4:00 it says “–– Atonement” (a long dash or hyphen, then the word “Atonement”.

At the 8:00 position is a symbol like three parallel curved lines, then a curlicue like a figure 9; from there to the 4:00 position it says “Ecce Mater tua”. (Behold Thy Mother).

On the reverse: a monogram, the letters STA; the S and A are in a mediaeval style script, the T is larger and overshadows the S and A, and is a plain sans-serif T (possibly a tau cross).

The inscription over the top reads “Rosary League”; around the bottom, “Oct. 7. 1901”

What are you trying to identify about it?

The Rosary League of OL Atonement was founded in the Anglican church by Fr. Paul Wattson, who also founded the Society of the Atonement. They were later all received into the Catholic Church.

October 7, 1901 was the day it was founded. 3 decades of the rosary at least were to be said by the members “to promote among Anglo-Catholics an increase of true devotion to the Holy Mother of God, thereby helping to win back for our Glorious Lady her Dowry in the home and hearts of American and English Christians, that Mary’s Anglican* children may once more become renowned throughout Christendom for the love and honor they show to the Blessed Virgin”

Then after the reception into the Church, the Society began to pray for the unity of Christians and conversion of the world. You will probably have heard of the Prayer for Christian Unity from Jan 18-25. That was started by him. You can see the reference in the brief Romanorum Pontificum
  • here used in the sense to mean English descent

I tried Googling “Our Lady of the Atonement” but all I got were links to parishes of that name.

So…a few more questions, if you would be so kind:
  • Are these medals still available somewhere?
  • Does one need to be “invested” with this medal (a la the Brown Scapular) or can it be blessed like a Miraculous Medal?
  • What exactly does “SA” stand for?
  • Is the “T” on the back of the medal a Tau cross? Or is it a letter T that stands for something?

You may have more luck if you Google Fr. Paul Wattson

S.A. = Society of the Atonement, the order founded by Fr. Paul when an Anglican.
T is a Tau cross representing their Franciscan spirituality
(Their modern descendants: graymoor.org/)

I’m not sure about the medal questions - perhaps you could email the friars and ask.

Thanks – I think I have enough info now.

I phoned the Friars and spoke with someone at their communications dept – she said the medal is “really old” – I don’t think they’re made nay more.

The only question now is its use as a sacramental. I’m going to e-mail the good friars and see – that will answer my last question.

Thanks again for all the info! I’m about to go do some more reading on Fr Paul Wattson.
