Our lady of....?

i’m a truck driver and i’ve seen signs all over the country for - our lady of guadalupe, our lady of the woods, our lady of the snows, our lady of this and our lady of that. what gives with all these names? did the blessed virgin appear at all of these places or did people just go nuts with giving her these names? :confused:

Yes, in many cases, it’s due to a reported apparition of the Blessed Virgin at these place names. Othertimes, it is used as a Marian devotional, aligning one’s city or town with her.

Try to think of it like this…

When you see various titles such as these given to Mary, they are each a different way she has touched people of a certain area, community, region…It is another way in which she has made herself known to us in order to lead us to her son Christ…

And think of each one of these “Our Lady of’s” as a cut on a diamond which makes the light, (Light of Christ), shine that much more beautifully…

As there are more cuts, there is even more beauty from the light shown to us all !!!

She tries to help us see her son even better, so that we will be drawn to him !!!

Mary directs our focus toward Christ, the light of the world…

While many titles of Our Lady (Guadalupe, LaSalette, Lourdes, Fatima, Knock, e.g.) are associated with apparitions of her that the Church has recognized as worthy of belief (but not essential for Catholics to accept) most other titles, e.g., Our Lady of the Snows, are simply a way in which a local community has chosen to designate her as their patroness.

Some are names given based on miracles that happened:

"The original name was Santa Maria ad Nives, “Our Lady of the Snows,” because according to the legend, a wealthy and pious Roman was told in a dream to build a church in honor of Our Lady. One midsummer day he found a part of the Esquiline hill covered with snow. The miraculous snow indicated the site and shape of the Basilica. Ever since Pope Liberius erected the Basilica, its greatest treasure has been an image of the Madonna with the child Jesus, attributed to St. Luke. "

I thought that might be what that was!!! Gorgeous Basillica by the way! I have a rosary from there.
