Oh for heavens sake…I thought you were talking about a child. What a jolt that was! All the same, I am sorry for the loss of your beloved pet and believe that there is a special place in heaven for the kind-hearted people who care for animals with such gentle devotion.

thank you all so much. I think a Statue of St. Francis is a fine FINE idea. We are re-doing the back yard and I know just the place. Roddy was a fine FINE companion. thank you, Joey’s wonderful mom for the link to the pet cemetery…Roddy’s name is there now (he was a Highland Scot, and so a fine Catholic Scotty). And I just know that somewhere out there is another little Scottish Terrier being prepared for my weird little family who will love to play catch on the stairs and be ready to go into the obedience ring and beat the pants off of the golden retrievers who always get the blue ribbons!

I feel your pain: when I was in college, I had to come home and put my scotty to sleep.

I still have my first dog’s collar, that collar is nearly 40 years old.

Oh my - I had tears in my eyes thinking about a little son lost, then was relieved to see it was a dog! However, I have too lost a cherished pet and the pain is real. Sorry for your loss.

Thank you…he was my little fur baby…he is dancing with St Francis in the “other heaven” now

Was that you, Leslie, on “the Doctor Is In”? A lady called about how to explain the loss of her dog, Roddy, to her preschool niece.

Deepest condolences. It still hurts, no matter when the fur babies leave us.

Yes, that was me…and Dr Colleen gave me some great words to use for Jillian. Jillie still sobbed her little heart out (I want my Roddy! Who is going to play catch with me! I want him to come home right NOW!) but I held her and told her it was absolutely ok to cry. I told her that I had cried, that Grandma had cried, that Ryan and Stephen had cried and that it was absolutely ok to cry. I told her that Roddy’s job here on earth was over, that God had been so very pleased with the good job Roddy had done being her companion, but that God had not left her alone. We took down her book about Guardian Angels and we looked at the pictures. We found some pictures of her and Roddy and we put them next to her bed with her Guardian Angel doll…and later that day I heard her telling her doll, “Now, you have to come outside with me because Roddy isn’t here anymore’”

Ok, so then I cried some more…

But Dr. Colleen was right…just those few phrases have helped me introduce her to the wonderful idea that we have immortal souls and that God assigns us our Angels to be with us for a reason, to watch over us and guard us and help us do good each day. It is still hard, because Roddy was a great little companion for each of us but especially for Jillian.

We all have such tough lessons growing up, don’t we? This is the first of many for her, and while I wish I could protect her and her brothers from all heartaches but then you end up with wimps for kids so…
