What is their source? What is your source?

Matthew 27:33-50
33* And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull), 34 they offered him wine to drink, mingled with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35* And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots; 36 then they sat down and kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. 39* And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads 40* and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way. 45* Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land * until the ninth hour. 46* And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lama sabach-thani?” that is, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48* And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” * 50 And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
Implies He was on the cross before the sixth hour when the darkness came.

Mark 15:25-37
25 And it was the third hour, when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. * 29* And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31* So also the chief priests mocked him to one another with the scribes, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. 33* And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land * until the ninth hour. 34* And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Elo-i, Elo-i, lama sabach-thani?” which means, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36* And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last.
Statesthat He had been on the cross three hours before the darkness arrived and three hours during the darkness.

Luke 23:33-46
33* And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. 34* And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” * And they cast lots to divide his garments. 35* And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” 36* The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar, 37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 There was also an inscription over him, * “This is the King of the Jews.” 39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41* And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” * 43* And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” 44* It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land * until the ninth hour, 45* while the sun’s light failed; * and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46* Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.
like Matthew implies that He had been on the cross for some time before the darkness occurred but does not say how long.

John, as usual, skips over the details the others have covered to emphasize his own points.

It appears that He was crucified at 9am, the darkness arrived at noon and He died at 3pm.

Correct. Some people mistake the hour of Jesus’ death for the duration of His crucifixion, and vica-versa.

I found this post by Father Serpa:
God does not demand blind faith from us. He has gone to great lengths to encourage our faith in Him and His love for us. Hanging on a cross for three hours does not demand a faith that is blind, but a faith that is informed. He has given us plenty of reason to trust Him. That we must trust Him is one of our greatest gifts from Him because it is in trusting Him that we show our love for Him. What else have we to give Him but that!
Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.

So, at the most… what?.. 9 hours? Wow! He seems to have been “lucky” (contextually speaking, mind you) compared to many who were suffering on their cross for days. I feel bad for Jesus, but I feel worse for those who were suffering for DAYS and not just hours. Some were even beaten until their insides were exposed (meaning, they were not in the condition to carry their cross AT ALL before being pinned to it). It is sad that their suffering means nothing to you. I suppose mankind is only moved by those sufferings that he stands to gain something from. 😦

“It is sad that their suffering means nothing to you.”

Completely wrong!

We are moved by the example of Christ’s suffering and death because He was without sin and died for us. Jesus inspires us to be moved and to love everyone more profoundly.

We are touched deeply by all suffering!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

You seem to only be “moved” by self interest.

You feel bad for “others” because they stayed on the cross longer than your savior Jesus Christ? How preposterous of you to even say this. Were the “others” who stayed for days beaten to a pulp over 50 lashes until they could barely stand up? Were they put on their head a crown of thorns, spit at, ridiculed, kicked, mocked and every other inconceivable action it took to kill this man Jesus Christ?? Did they get pierced in their side? Did they carry a cross that was too much to bare? For miles? Did they fall 3 times while doing so?

Uhm… huge no-no to me. Jesus is not my saviour. God has already declared that He has filled that role Himself for me. Isaiah 43:10-12 <----- 100% Know this is Truth.

Uhm… they weren’t treated kindly… and we know for a fact that many were left up for DAYS to suffer; and yes, beaten just as badly as Jesus was. I am NOT undermining what Jesus went through… it hurts, but YOU are undermining what the others went through and you admit the reason why in this post of yours… BECAUSE YOU GET NOTHING OUT OF IT. Else, you would be just as broken over their sufferings as you are Jesus’. :bighanky:

Jesus suffering is for all time. You call it “getting something out of it”. We call it loving mercy.

The cross shows us that God Himself, creator of the universe, left his throne and came to Earth as a human and suffered and died to cleanse us of all sin, so that we could go to heaven. It’s beautiful really. It shows us how much God loves us.

Hey, I’m broken up over the crucifixions back then. There have been many atrocities throughout history. Jesus’, though, was massively important. This does not undermine the sorrow we feel for any other innocent man or woman suffering.

It’s a little like, “Why are you so sad about Ann Frank? So many other Jews died during WWII.” But we knew her personally through her diary. Does that mean we don’t feel sad about everyone else who died in the Holocaust? Absolutely not! Just something to ponder…

God Bless.

I like this analogy! 👍 I do not believe in the mysticism that comes with the story of Jesus, but this… well, I can understand what you mean here.

Like I said, what Jesus went through certainly was horrific. I tend to view it from Mary Magdalene’s perspective… to see her love suffering so and not being able to do anything about it. If seeing it from Jesus’ perspective helps us to realize what it is that the Jewish have been through, then it certainly was not in vain. If, however, we are only motivated so far as what it is we think he did for US, then we are no better than those who have supported abuse for selfish reasons to many different peoples across this globe throughout its history. I do not see that he suffered for me… I see this is a Jewish man who suffered simply because he was Jewish…there certainly is much to be learned about human nature and what lengths we will go to in order to cover our guilt. 😊

I have seen it commented that when we see our loved ones suffer, we can turn to God. But where could Mary turn when she saw her son suffer; He is God.

You have been reading to much Davinci code! Mary magdelane’s love? I swear your only purpose on this board is to go against the grain and try to push buttons…get a life.

I agree, but the “get a life” comment was way too harsh. Refute her lies with humility please.😦

Who did Jesus pray to B4 His death, Was it the Father in heaven, well may that is who Mary was praying to. Whats think

Was Jesus nice when it came to the money changers in the temple? Sometimes being a bit “HARSH” is justified.Have you read the ridiculous statements that he/she has written?

**You gotta be kidding me. **I feel the pain of my/your Savior, and I only care about Him. If others died the same way as on the Cross, SO BE IT, because no one and I repeat NO ONE SUFFERED MORE THAN JESUS CHRIST FOR YOU AND FOR ME. You can undermine it all you want to and use excuse after excuse which is pathetic, but Jesus died a horrific death and for you, yet you still don’t get it…🤷
