This has been part of the tradition of the parish since the parish priests he succeeded also imposed this prohibition.

Was it correct to refuse communion to women churchgoers who wore pants?

This is simply not a true post, If it is (which I doubt) you can rest assured that one call to the bishop will result in change or a new pastor.

No way possible. There is not a single thing that could back that position up.

I don’t see any basis for that position. I would ask if I were you what his basis rests on.

He also requires the churchgoers to receive the host by the tongue because that is the proper way of doing it.

And also the churchgoers must kneel in receiving the host because Satan enticed the believers not to kneel before the host who is Jesus himself.

Something that I always try to remind myself is that I am not holier than the Church. If the Church officially puts its mark of approval on something such as receiving in the hand, even tho I may personally disagree with it, it is not my responsibility to decide the church is wrong. All schisms and heresies are born from those who believe they have more access to the truth than the church does.

This priest should be reported to the bishop at once. He is becoming his own magesterium.

While he may good intentions and there are indications that the Pope is actually going to bring the Church back to these practices, until it actually happens, he NEEDS to follow what are the official practices of the Church and if he fails to do so, the Bishop should be explain to the people why this priest is allowed to deviate from what the Church has established.

My hearing of such a brave priest so concerned about the souls of his parishioners is quite inspiring.

Concerning the prohibition of wearing pants during the Mass, many parishioners preferred to attend Masses in other parishes.

A priest making up his own rules is not inspriring. It borders on the sin of pride becase he is saying he knows better than the church. Again, this is the root cause of schisms and heresies and although this situation does not rise to this level yet, it could cause scandal because it could lead others to believe it is okay to make your own rules if you don’t agree with the Church.

I hope you’re not referring to denying communion to someone simply because of what they’re wearing.

This is such an unfortunate situation and I know it is very true especially in the ‘African cultural influenced’ churches. It is so infuriating to see this happen. A number of churches in our African dominations have lately imposed that women should always cover their heads when attending mass. It unfortunately comes at a wrong time. It is above all, painful to see many of our fellow Catholics leaving our churches for other churches, where they would not have to cover their heads all the time.

Hmm… Perhaps someday this fellow will be a saint.

Lovely story. Truly.

Such courage, in the face of the world.

And yet to hear too it is a long standing tradition at the parish, ah it’s wonderful.

Thank you for this happy story for the day. 🙂

Are you referring to refusing communion for wearing pants or insisting on reception on the tongue?

Oh the pants of course, that takes far more courage. 🙂

I am in a word, impressed. The man has made my day, I love to see someone of his caliber.

He’s after God’s own heart.

I’m just curious where the Church, not as official doctrine, but has formally stated that pants/slacks for women is an unacceptable form of dress. Can you provide that source? And if it hasn’t, what qualifies this priest to make such a judgment call on fashion?

Just a note, this person is from the Philippines.

I don’t really see how that would change the pants thing, but for the Communion in the hand, it may. I couldn’t find anything official, but I found a number of unofficial references saying that Communion in the hand, at one time being ok, has been disallowed there now.

He does in fact, by Canon Law, have a duty to deny Holy Communion to those who live obstinately in a state of manifest grave sin.

**Can. 915 **Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to holy communion.

It has been taught by the Church in both Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition that people are not to dress immodestly. If women in pants are by definition gravely immodest, then the priest is duty bound by Canon Law to refuse them admission to Holy Communion.

As far as the posture for receiving Holy Communion, there is nothing wrong with the prudential judgment of the priest who demands a posture of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. This is, in fact, what the Pope demands of those receiving Communion from him. And, as far as his prudential judgment that Communion be received on the tongue, how can anyone find fault with that? Perhaps he takes his duty to protect the Blessed Sacrament most seriously…and wishes to prevent any forseeable sacrilege against It…Who knows?

If we judge this priest bad…we must be certain that we judge him justly (based on objective morality and not subjective preference).

I don’t see any reason to believe also that this is not all done with at least the tacit approval of the Bishop, especially if it was also done by his predecessor.

Please show us where the the official authority of the Church has ever declared that women wearing pants is living “obstinately in a state of manifest grave sin.” I hardly think that your opinion of Canon 915 applies to such a simple and unimportant issue.
