**The charity in this thread - on both sides of the argument - is significantly less than impressive.

If it is not possible to discuss the issue with a modicum of courtesy toward one another and without being judgmental in discussing the clergy**, the thread will close and those unheeding of this note will be individually addressed accordingly.

Thank you for your participation in the discussion.

Thank you, moderator! I’m constantly surprised by the rancor that’s expressed in these Catholic forums. Is this how Jesus would handle himself? “Where Charity and Love prevail…”

There is also such a thing as scandal.
Priests are to avoid scandalizing the faithful, simple.
The faithful are to avoid assuming there is a scandal, simple.

I agree with the original poster, priests should dress appropriately.
But I’m more concerned about what the priests are preaching (as I know the original poster is as well)

Bear in mind, this is a Catholic discussion board, where all facets of the faith are discussed and all concerns of the faithful are discussed as well.

No need to jump down eachother’s throats
else we scandalize eachother.

God Bless,
Mordocai

Our priest wear brown long robes with a knotted rope tied around their waist and wear sandals with no socks—they’re Franciscans .

Maybe you priest is emulating what he sees the congregation wearing to Mass 🙂

Wow. I really feel sorry for this poor priest. If wearing old sweats is the worst thing about him I’d take him for my parish in minute. I mean this kindly, but some of us are in danger of nitpicking our priests to death.

I’ve never considered priest’s or religious’ dress “codes”… but let me make one comment… most priests and religious’ that I have known were famous for their modesty. One priest apologized for the off-color trousers and shoes… he got them by mail from Haband for almost nothing and they didn’t ship the right color. He was embarrassed that they weren’t really dark enough.

One nun asked if her attire was ok. She got it from the recycling bin.

These folks (and many others) give EVERYTHING to the poor. They don’t advertise it; you have to practically live with them to find out how frugal and how careful they are with money in general and ask NOTHING for themselves. You only find out by spending a lot of time hanging around the church.

One priest had no place to go on his day off, so he used his own meager salary to buy wood working tools that he installed in the garage. He spent his time off making small furniture items, chess sets, etc. When he found out that some of the youngsters were having trouble finding work, he set up woodworking courses in his shop, so they would have job skills to offer.

I have never encountered such an amazing bunch of men and women who give up their entire lives for their parishioners.

And they don’t tell this stuff to folks; you have to know about it and drag it out of them.

At my parish, what the priests wear depends on the priest. The pastor wears his Franciscan habit over normal clothes when he’s outside of the rectory. In the rectory… I’ve had appointments with him when he had on a t-shirt, slacks, and holey socks 😃 The two elderly priests who are referred to as “pastors emeriti” tend to wear clerical shirts with slacks when they are not in habits.

yeah, the dominicans at my school’s chapel usually doff their habits when they are alone in their offices or when students arent likly to be there. The old respectable friar usually wears whatever pants that re available at the priory and an old t-shirt (he is a “shell method” type), if he is going to go an extended period without his habit on, he wears an emroidered polo.

One thing I think is good to remember. The Priest is not just another person. He is special. His ordination set him somewhat apart from us. His mission in life puts him in a unique position in relation to us. He represents the church and he should stand out in that representation. He should not be like, act like or look just like everyone else. He is so much more than that.

One of the problems that we have in the Church today is a general loss of the prestige, dignity and respect that the priests used to have. I think that came about with the blurring of the lines between the laity and the clergy following Vatican II. While probably well intentioned it basically ignored that under the system we have in the church, authority flows down from the Pope towards us in a chain of command kind of thing for lack of a better term. The Priest is the one representative of the institutional church that most of us will ever come in cotact with except at confirmations. And even then, he is probably the only one we will ever know personally.

I don’t think that his manner of dress while not working should really be a matter of concern, but then again, priests don’t have regular hours, their job is not a typical one. With that in mind, and given the enormity of his job and his responsibility, the priest I think, should strive to set an example in everything he does and everything he says.

As an aside, when I was in the military, I served two years with a Marine Corps unit, even though I was in the Navy. We used to joke that we could always spot Marine Corps Officers off duty by the way they dressed and the way they carried themselves. But it wasn’t a joke. Those men and women knew they represented something different, something they were proud of, something that was vitally important to them. They took their office very seriously. Most priests used to feel the same way, and I’m sure that mostt of them still do.

As for the others, well maybe they need to think of exactly what they are, what they represent and what their mission in life is.
