Our priest said "No Gum"

Apparently having the ability to look into people’s hearts and minds, you should be able to tell I’m not looking for a loop-hole (I don’t chew gum). I asked because if a person forgot (and I’m sure YOU would NEVER forget) to spit their gum out, but realized that they still had it in their mouth before Holy Communion, if it was gum that had sugar in it, they would, even though it was an accident, be obliged to refrain from communion, whereas if it didn’t have sugar or nutritional value, they might not (they aren’t swallowing anything, except saliva, which we do anyway). I believe I said that chewing gum was improper in church, but human beings being human beings…
JKirk…you mean…you are…I mean…OH I found one…real human being, a mere mortal, you do exist. That means you have a…❤️

Yes, chewing gum is not the thing to do in church. And I have seen people with cough drops for obvious reasons.

I like the way Dave’s priest said it…it got the point across without bullying…to teach as Jesus did. Way to go…🙂 🙂

If YOU interrupted my reply as being “testy” netmil(name removed by moderator), then I apologize for your not understanding my intention. I have read MANY of JKirkLVNV’s posts in the past and have always found his posts insightful. I simply wasn’t sure if he was being serious or not. But thanks for your reprimand just the same. God bless.
Oh, no, sorry, I wasn’t being sacrcastic!

Thanks, Netmil(name removed by moderator), for coming to my defense, but all’s good!

Also let me clarify I did not think you where looking for a loophole…I ws speaking in general terms:)
Sorry if I got testy. I do on occasion. I was looking for info. God bless.

Okay, I try to admit when I’m wrong.
I was wrong. Just a little “testy” when it comes to my pals.

Sorry. 🙂

I know medicene does not break the fast, but I was told that gum did.

I HOPE caugh drops do not, since I did recieve Communion once after using caugh drops. I had a dreadful cold that day, and since I thought caugh drops were medicene, I still recieved.
Forgive me for asking but why did you even attend Mass? You would not be sinning by staying away while ill and you would not be in church passing on the virus to all those around you.

Interesting how fast a thread like this gets big.

Two anecdotes, the first by proxy. My father grew up in a parish in which the priest/pastor would have had no hesitation in publicly humiliating anyone who chew gum in church. They didn’t care in those days that they might be losing a “member.” That, to my mind, is as it should be.

Personal anecdote: baby playing with rattle all through Mass. Nice priest. Thirty minute disjointed homily from young priest because he is distracted by baby playing with rattle. What would I have done? “Usher, please find the baby playing with the rattle and make it stop.”

Misbehavior in church must be dealt with by the strictest means, and we shouldn’t care if it is by the grandchildren of someone who gives a million dollars a year.

bully the parishoners…that’ll keep em in line.

When my father was in 7th grade, circa 1941. He was waiting to go to confession. The girl in front of him came out hysterically crying…my dad asked her what was wrong…she said…
“I told Father that my mother served meat on Friday and he said, that she should have her hands cut off…I’m so afraid…”

My dad skipped confession that day. If a priest said that to me…I would be out of there like a shot.

That’s what I’m asking! If it has no nutritional value, does it break the fast?
True medicine and water do not break the fast. It is a fast from food and drink, not a fast from nutritionally balanced meals. If it’s food or drink, diet or otherwise, makes no difference!

Members of the choir asked if they could have water when singing. There were told yes if they did not receive communion. For the water broke the fast.

Whoever told you that was wrong!

Canon Law:

Can. 919 §1 Whoever is to receive the blessed Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from all food and drink, with the sole exception of water and medicine.

We’re cool netmil(name removed by moderator). Truth be known, I have and still do find your posts most insightful as well. There are several people here in the forums who post very informatively and usually, when I see their name at the top of a reply I immediately move to another thread because I know that the initial question was answered accurately. Yours, a long with JKirkLVNV, Puzzleannie, and several others fall into this category. Peace and God bless.

JKirkLVNV,
If you took my reply to your post as something less than charitable (which after re-reading it, I can see how someone could), then please accept my apologies. I assure you that was not my intention. I suppose I need to work on trying to be more careful in this regard. I truly didn’t know whether you were kidding or being serious. Please accept my apologies. God bless.:o

Not a problem in the least! Please be at ease.

My pastor put the following in the bulletin this week: “Just a reminder, please turn off your cell phone while in church. Also, there should be no gum chewing during church. I would not want to embarrass someone by asking them to take their gum out in the Communion line. The church still asks us to fast one hour before Communion. Thank you.”

I think we need something like this posted on the front door of every church. Along with who can or not-- present themselves for Holy Communion.

That would be nice! I don’t understand why most parish priests refrain from correcting the ignorant on this issue.

Regarding chewing gum and the pre-communion fast, Jimmy Akin has an interesting take on this: Gum at Mass.

I’m sitting the fence for now.

Even if gum doesn’t break the Eucharistic fast, as Jimmy Akin states, I still think it is disrespectful to our Lord. I think my priest did the right thing by mentioning not to chew gum in church in our church bulletin.
