Dear StrawberryJam: My question wasn’t in relation to salvation, but a matter of curiosity. I’m curious as to whether or not Jesus ate meat.

We know he did not eat pork, that is certain.
If he ate meat? - refer back to my earlier post.
He may have, or may not have. As I said, he must not have felt is was important enough of a matter for those who penned the bible to mention. Most likely becuase it was not an issue of salvation.
Now, if you want to know if he did or did not eat meat in spite of his not mentioning it, or the bible mentioning it…
Where do you think you will gain such knowledge from, and for what purpose?
Perhaps Jesus knew people would misuse knowledge of trivia to their own destruction?
IE: If starving and only has meat available and eats it, but Jesus never did- will starve for fear they are not “Jesuslike” enough?
Was that the miztovh?

Cats will bite the heads off of birds and mice after toying with them for long periods of time.
A hungry cat will kill without toying. A domestic cat, in a way, has an unfair advantage over its victims; she will toy.

If He observed Jewish feasts with His parents you can be sure about that. He fulfilled the Law.

I know he would have been an observant Jew, just as he was baptized by John the Baptist who told him he should not be the one being baptized by him.
But, I am very very hesitant to assume the perfect sacrifice actually did partake of the meat at passover. I don’t know enough about it yet, but I almost wonder if it would have been a thing he could not do as the perfect sacrifice. It is problematic, and taxes my brain.

I am vegan.

Here is something that angers me: the argument that because Christ ate meat, it is okay to eat meat. The processes involved in the killing of animals was different then. It was before the industrialisation of the food chain which kills focusing on profit rather than sustenance. Different ball game. We shouldn’t eat meat.
So we change the way we kill food animals to be more humane; we don’t have to simply give up eating meat.

It angers me that some people come up with non sequiturs to say why we shouldn’t eat meat. So what? We both get angered.

You have not presented an argument as to why the reasoning of Jesus having eaten meat is a valid reason why we can eat meat is faulty. When I eat meat, I focus on sustenance. I don’t have the choice to go out and raise my own meat.

Ugh. Are you saying Definitively that Jesus ate meat? I realize he ate fish. But I really see no basis to stand by any comment that he ate the passover lamb. Maybe another catholic can help here.

He was a devout Jew…any reason to think that he did NOT partake fully in the Passover meal(s)?

I agree he followed all laws, and was perfect. Fully human, Fully man.
But, he alone was the perfect sacrifice.
Would he have to eat the meals, just as he had to be baptized by John the Baptist?
In the case of Baptisim, I understand and it does not pose any problem for me.
In the case of eating meat, other than fish it does. Perhaps I need to talk to my priest about this, as I never have before.
Edit to add: Meat is death, Milk is life.
This is why I was Kosher years and years ago as a kid. It just made sense, and my Jewish friend told me that is what it meant. I did not believe in the God of Abraham, or Jesus at that time. But, it just made sense to me that meat is death and milk is life. I needed no God to tell me that, but I admit I needed my Jewish friend to explain it to me that way. That is not to say I never had a cheeseburger. I just know this will lead to mocking. Just being honest, I am not a believer in the God you are yet.

It doesn’t matter what you focus on when you eat meat, because by the time you have spent your money on the meat you have already voted with your wallet and supported the slaughterhouses.
The issue with the slaughterhouses isn’t how ‘humane’ the killing method is (‘is there really a humane way to kill something?’) The issue is than animals are now killed in enormous numbers with the focus of the death being on financial gain rather than sustenance. To my mind at least, every argument about ‘the food chain’ goes out the window because of that. Sure, animals on earth kill each other for food but 1: humans are “a people set apart” etc. and generally considered to be capable of more than animals lower on the chain; 2: humans are no longer killing animals for food in the one-on-one hunter/prey scenario (an exaggeration, but I’m sure you’ll see what I’m getting at) that all chat of the food chain is centred around.

I don’t think that there is specific reference in the Bible, although there could be. I brought it up because a girl said to me, verbatim “Jesus ate meat. Do you think you’re better than Jesus?”.

Being a bit of an animals rights fan, a semi-vegetarian, and an owner of three cats and a dog whom I all love, I was a bit reluctant to read this thread. I hate animal cruelty with a fiery passion. I fully expected a lot of “grill 'em up” type of macho nonsense but what I’ve mostly found in this thread so far is a lot of compassion, kindness, thoughtfulness, and reassurance. Nice to see so many animal lovers and compassionate folks in here. 👍

Agreed,
Its good to see animal abusers (dog fighting etc) going to jail :thumbsup:these days.

 This makes no sense. The food that is produced by animal production facilities is bought and eaten. It’s a matter of efficiency. Crops are harvested by big machines, people don’t harvest their own crops. Similarly, large production facilities process animal products (food, etc.); people with rare exceptions do not raise and slaughter or hunt their own meat, as an exclusive source.

We’ve simply found a more effecient way of obtaining food through the food chain. That does not change that it still remains a food chain.

And yes, there is a humane i.e. compassionate way to kill something. I do it as a routine part of my work as a veterinarian.
