Our vulgar and debased culture, it has sunk so far, how do we respond?

As far as the behavior of my co-workers, I see know point in trying to get the world to behave, I have more important battles to fight. I don’t feel like the obnoxious comments constitute a hostile workplace.

I totally respect your decision. Clearly you know your circumstances better than anyone. At least you might have a better understanding of your rights. Peace!

Carmen works at a hospital? Carmen has had sensitivity training, and she knows that her comment to her co-worker could be taken as sexual harassment and could get her fired. Even our vulgar and debased culture has some boundaries (and in some ways it is actually improving). The conversation could start with, “Wow, if a male tech said that to female nurse, he could get fired so fast it would leave test tubes spinning behind him in the hallway. Don’t think it can’t happen to you, Carmen. You’re going to offend the wrong stranger some day.”

I think after defending the fellow that if Carman kept it up, I might say, “Well, I hope you don’t call me a weirdo when I don’t toe the line and do what you think. The guy is new here, just visiting, he makes the mistake of telling you he isn’t resting well, and instead of just giving the guy a little sympathy you conclude he’s got some kind of sexual inadequacy going on and then tell the rest of the hospital he is a weirdo because he didn’t mistake you for Dr. Ruth. You sound like a schoolyard bully. Why anyone overhearing you would tell you a single personal thing about themselves, I’m sure I don’t know. Like I said, if one of the guys came on like that, we all know how we’d see that. We’d be calling somebody a weirdo, or maybe a creep, but it wouldn’t be the sleepless new nurse. It would be the creepy tech who keeps thinking up excuses to talk about sex at work.”

(Speaking of Dr. Ruth…)
