Well no one knows what is in a priests head regarding those 3 things, but I would hope he wouldn’t speak out about them. If my priest did I wouldn’t be very happy, it would certainly make me lose faith in him. That’s where problems in the church come from, people thinking they can take this and leave that about the Church, ie forgetting that it isnt man who made the church but God.

I do think those things ought to bar a gent from becoming a priest, as a vocation call comes from God and if God is calling someone to a vocation, then that person ought to be ready to submit to God completely, including His body the church in full obedience. If he can’t do that I cant see how his vocation will progress even if he manages to never speak of these things out loud, which is unlikely. I’d suggest he work on letting God heal his soul first before moving on with such a vocation.

Let me also add that a Priest is certainly entitled to a free conscience, but the Pope is also free to excommunicate them and uphold the teaching of the Church. Sometimes change is necessary in the Church, but it must come with the approval of the Holy See. The Pope is not wrong to excommunicate Priests that do not uphold church teaching. Those that want to be Priests should therefore be careful about this and know what they’re getting into.

Just out of curiosity, do these factors bar a gent from becoming a priest? Just wondering because I know of priests who hold these views, and haven’t been laicized or anything crazy like that:

-Believing women should be ordained

-Refusing to believe in papal infallibility

-Refusing to believe in the Second Vatican Council

Many thanks
All three of those views SHOULD bar a man from becoming a priest.

But honestly, sometimes a vocations director, the seminary formation faculty, and/or the bishop might protect the dissent seminarian if it suits their agenda. 😦
