The great achievement of John Paul II was the defeat of communism by peaceful means. While the world is now a better place, it still has problems.

Perhaps the most serious one is hunger in the midst of plenty. More than a billion people are malnourished, and 20,000 die each day for lack of food. Many in prosperous nations show no concern because the misery is out of sight.

I hoped that the new pope would be chosen from one of the underdeveloped nations and that he would be a voice for the suffering poor.

The U.S, alone is spending nearly a trillion dollars a year on our own security. This is misguided. We need to demonstrate care for our suffering poor.

That’s a noble thought but not very practical given the nature of the governments in the most needy of the African countries. Before you knock the US so hard, do a quick check on how much we officially (the government) contribute to relief efforts. Then add to that what is given by various religious organizations such as Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army and the Red Cross, and you will see that we’re not as uncaring as some would have us believe. The most pressing problem right now is how to get the aid past the crooked African governments and into the hands of the needy.

Having worked with a few organizations that had to budget bribes into plans to deliver aid to Africa, I have to agree.

The most pressing problem right now is the reconversion of Catholics in the west so that the vast majority of them will not end up in hell for living lives in a constant state of mortal sin.

I thought Jesus said that the Father had appointed Him judge of all men. Have you taken over his job?

China is not a Communist country ? Or Cuba ? Or several in Africa ?

Apart from the usual exaggeration about JP2, a good post 🙂 ##
