I don’t mean to make this as another “personal shrine” thread, but one geared specifically for the people who have created outdoor shrines.
First, I had a small homemade “wayside” shrine in the backyard, but the winter knocked over the pole. So, I asked our neighbor if he wouldn’t mind screwing the shrine box to the tree that bridges our yards. He was more than happy to oblige!
So, for Lent, I undertook a sacrifice of humility and put my faith on display. I made a Marian shrine for the front yard (still needs tweaking, but hey, why not try?)
I’ve found many websites for Marian gardens where you can lay out perpetually blooming flowers throughout the seasons, but I wasn’t blessed with such a green thumb.
At first, it was very simple:
And then I tried some topiary just to see what it would look like. That’s when I got the idea to make a large garden circle in front of her, but then realized that a) I was on a budget and b) it would be a little ostentatious:
So I just blocked it in with edge fencing from Kmart:
And here’s the final view (so far):
Now, I did order a sanctuary/graveside lamp for under $55.00 and can’t wait until it gets here; that may mean that I would have to retire the incense holder but I’m not sure yet. What would you suggest?
Question 1: How did you choose between putting a shrine in your front yard or your back yard?
Question 2. If you have a noticable yard shrine, what kind of feedback have you received from your neighbors, if any? I have had people ask if they could see it closer, or if they could show their children. I even “caught” one lady in prayer from the sidewalk.
Question 3: How did you plan out your shrine, and how did it evolve? Did you add more and more as you could afford it? Was it all planned out from the beginning or did it just “grow?”
Question 4: I think I am going to invite the neighbor;s children to a May Crowning. Do you think that’s a good idea? (They’re Catholic, too.)
Question 5: I wonder if I should drape it in purple or black from Good Friday until Easter morning, when I’ll put silk Easter lillies around the base (weather permitting). Stupid idea or not? Does anyone else use flags or cloth to represent the liturgical colors/seasons?

Rather, it was a black and white chart that gave times of the seasons that different flowers would bloom so you’d always have something in your garden… part of the season might be roses, part of the season lilies, etc.
