Can the Lord himself deconsecrate a host?

Just wondering.

Also how long does a Host stay consecrated?

Say a Host was consecrated and accidently left somewhere eventually becoming dust, is it still the body of our Lord? Or say someone buries one and it degrades, at what point does it cease being the body of Our Lord?

I’m curious.
My understanding is that once the host has “lost” its appearance of bread, it has ceased being the body of Christ. Hence the use of the bowl of holy water (ablution cup)… and the “disposal” into the ground of remaining drops of Precious Blood, or particles of the Host. So to, after communion, the host is absorbed by the body, and is no longer the Body of Christ. Thus the dust, which is no longer the host, is not the Body of Christ.

Regardless, reverence is due in all these matters.

Agreed. thanks for clearing that up.

The “Reverend” Ian Paisley got hold of a consecrated (he claimed) Host once and abused it at some public meeting.

I thought maybe Our Lord would do something himself (withdrawn his presense) in the case of abuse of a Host.

This is the reply I get from eBay (emphasis in bold).

Hello ben,

Thank you for taking the time to write eBay with your concerns. I’m happy to help you further. I understand that you are upset at having seen certain Catholic items or items related to the Pope on eBay, including item #6169851381. Because eBay’s community is a diverse, international group of more than 135 million users with varied backgrounds and beliefs, there are times when some items listed on eBay by sellers might be offensive to at least some of our users somewhere in the world. At times, members may see listings that they may consider morally wrong or objectionable. However, even though these listings may be offensive to some, please remember that most of the time the law does not prohibit the items.

Due to the fact that eBay’s focus is to have a free and diverse community, we are reluctant to interfere with listings that are not illegal. Regarding offensive items, there are many items that are considered sacred to many people of various religions, and we sometimes hear complaints about these items. Examples would be Catholic relics of saints, Mormon (LDS) garments, certain Buddhist tablets, etc. However, eBay has made the decision not to prohibit any item only on the basis of the item being endowed with sacred properties by certain religious groups. In general, eBay will remove items for a violation of our Offensive Materials policy only in extreme examples in which the listing explicitly promotes hatred, violence, or racial intolerance. However, we do not remove religious items that are otherwise legal for sale and do not violate any other eBay listing policy.

Please keep in mind that many of us at eBay may also share your distaste with an item, and may not support the sale. In fact, eBay has many Catholic employees. However, we do our best to understand and tolerate the many viewpoints held by our worldwide community. The Eucharist is not illegal to sell, and is generally allowed on eBay as long as the seller does not otherwise include hateful text or images in the listing.

Although we realize that you may not agree with this decision on eBay’s part, we hope that you can respect the diverse and open nature of eBay’s marketplace.

Regards,
Pieter

Message: Dear eBay,

I find it extremely offensive that sacred items are sold on eBay. The seller, a non Catholic, attends a Catholic Mass service, obtains the Eucharist which he is not supposed to, hid it from others, then sell it on eBay. I find it a disgraceful and an offensive act, especially to Catholics worldwide. Many others will submit similar emails. Please void this item and add it to the prohibited list.

Thank you very much.

Warmest regards,
-Ben
I received the same “boilerplate” reply from them, too.

So what can we do now?

what can we do???

I have already spreading the word of this in Mexico i will post flyers in some churchs and send an email to the newspapers hope this will help in any way

Why not get the press involved? Considering that the people at ebay admit that it is not just the Catholic church that are having problems with their selling of religious items, I would think that we would get a lot of public support.

It has been on FOX and MSNBC so far that I have seen.A lawyer was being interviewed on FOX last night and said that MORMON RELIGIOUS GARMENTS WERE BANNED THERE SO AS NOT TO OFFEND MORMONS:mad: So I guess that Catholics are free to be trampled under foot along with our Lord:banghead: Blatent biggotry:tsktsk:

It was on FOX? I missed the news coverage. What were they saying? Thanks!

I have called E-Bay. I was on hold for a long time at least 30 minutes. They paid for the call. I asked for tech support and told them I was having trouble e-mailing them and would they help me through the process. I talked to the woman who answered for quite awhile. This was not a ruse I did have trouble figuring out what I should choose in the categories and she was kind in helping me. It also made her listen. She told me she was Catholic too but did not seem to share my upsetness. I also told her there was a possibility of a boycott. This got her attention. There are other on-line auctions and I think I will be checking them out.

If you haven’t called do so NOW. Ask them for help in guiding you through sending an e-mail.

This is exactly what’s wrong with the Catholic Church in Maerica.

hola:
i send the ebay link to a lot of friends who i know use ebay and we have started to make calls and send mails.
so far i send the ebay link to:
the legionaries of Christ
opus dei
franciscans
catholic schools
churches
the catholic league (USA)
and the archdiosesis
so the ball is moving (remember that what we want is not to damage ebay, we want them to forbid (ban) that kind of sales or auctions.
WE CANT DO IT ALONE, SO PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD

I got two form letters from them. The first which a few of you got, then another after I responded to the first. I don’t know who to be more angry with;ebay for putting the dollar above all else, the man who sold it, or the ignorant “Catholics” who don’t get why this is a big, no huge deal!!!
Who said there is no discrimination against Catholics? It is clear the world dislikes us and our beliefs.
I will keep forwarding this info to everyone I know that is Catholic. They will hear us!!!

A friend of mine contacted the USCCB. Only three people had called to complain 😦 They told him to send an email to jmoroney@usccb.org
I am not sure what his actual title is but apparently this would fall to him.

If this is really permitting the sale of a stolen item, could we get lawyers on the case? And are we really boycotting eBay?

Perhaps we need a little clarification on the meaning of transubstantiation but I am certain that if someone obtains a consecrated host for any purpose but to consume it in the spirit of faith, we need not fear that somehow God will be damaged. I remember reading that for a consecration to be valid, there is a certain requirement of intent. And if the intent is not true, the consecration is not valid… I am confident that anyone who has obtained a host for financial or related gain, even though that host was physically present at a mass, does not possess the Body of Christ.
The intent is on the part of the MINISTER (priest/bishop).

If the MINISTER is valid and he uses valid form, matter, subject, and intent then then the Eucharist IS the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, REGARDLESS of what the recepitent intends or believes (to think otherwise falls into a heresy known as “receptionism”).

A satanist who obtains a Host at a Mass and takes it to a satanic ritual (it happens) desecrates the actual Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord.

Good news! Check out this article on Spiritdaily:

The consecrated host was returned to the diocese! Let’s pray that ebay will change its policy and prohibit all future sales of the Eucharist!

Pax Vobiscum

i know we most show cortesy on this forum but:… ITS SO DIFICULT RIGHT NOW
That is understandable. Rejoice in it, though, for if being kind was easy there would be no virtue in it.

The more I think about this, the more I see it as a blessed opportunity to evangelize.

What they are doing is spiritually outrageous to us. Forgive them for they know not what they do. Accept what they are doing and turn it into the Lord’s benefit.

Try looking at it this way; this non-Catholic has done something few Catholics have ever done. He/she has ignited a worldwide firestorm of discussion about how sacred the Holy Eucharist is, and how valuable it is to attend a Mass with JPII.

The more outraged we are, the more we are falling into satan’s trap and reaffirming the view that Catholics are angry, intolerant, and anxiety ridden. Who, looking for peace, is going to join THAT group?

Let’s not get our proverbial “panties” in a wad over this; use every opportunity to evangelize. Contact Ebay and evangelize, and as others have said stay charitable. Just think, if we play our cards right and stay friendly rather than threatening and angry, we could call their customer service and have pleasant conversations with their reps and share our faith.

Legal action? Pulleeeze. Non-Catholics (and many Catholics for that matter) really don’t see that host as anything more than a piece of bread. How often did Christ turn to the legal authorities to prevent someone from sinning?

Remember the Son of Man will come as a thief in the night; use your worldly prowess to “sneak in” some Good News wherever you can. Even the dishonest steward was praised by his master for his worldly accumen.

I very proud of my fellow CA-Forums Members on this and the other related threads that worked so diligently to resolve this sacrilege.

It is great to see that your actions proved worthwhile. This is proof that if we all work together, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can accomplish great things.

My hope is that this experience opens the eyes of some to the true nature of the Eucharist.

Congratulations.
