I’ve come to learn one objection to the Immaculate Conception is that if Mary was conceived without original sin, then she is not like us… the flesh derived by Christ is not the same as ours.

If that is the case, wouldn’t that same logic place Jesus outside the human race? Not fully human?

Who objects? What’s their authority?

I believe we are all considered to be descendants of Adam and Eve, correct? Well, they were both created without original sin. It is not sin which makes us human. Sounds like you have a Calvinist argument here.

So according to this person sin is what defines what is a Homo Saipan and not DNA?

Hmmm, ok.

BTW - Adam & Eve were immaculately created too. Would that person argue that they were not fully human?

Go to the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy webpage and search Immaculate Conception. The title of the article is The New Eve is Conceived.

Thank you.

So if I understand, Theotokos was sanctified at conception.

However the East does not understand original sin the way the West does. But they do understand original sin.

Trent defined the Immaculate Conception as being free from all stain of original sin.

The East believe Mary was sanctified before birth, but still subject to the effects of original sin, namely death, labor pains, etc…

So the East also believes Jesus was still subject to the effects of original sin, namely death.

So it’s not the Wests teaching of the Immaculate Conception the East argue, it’s the West’s teaching of original sin.
