I find that sometimes during the mass I am completely overwhelmed with emotion. This usually happens during the consecration and often lasts until the end of communion. It is pretty embarrassing for a 200 pound, six foot tall, sixty-year-old man to be sobbing uncontrollably in public. What can I do?

Absolutely nothing. You are aware of the Real Presence of Jesus and I would be consoled to see a brother in the Lord so overcome with joy. As for the embarrassment I would rather be embarrassed by those who so ho-hum come up for Holy Communion and take Jesus for granted, by those who see the Eucharist as a symbol, by those who receive Him in the state of mortal sin, by non-Catholics who come forward with a sense of entitlement or arrogance, etc.

God bless.

Joe

I would not worry about your show of emotion…Everybody has different reactions in the presence of Jesus…God bless you…

Accept it, it is a gift from God, just don’t do it anywhere else!

You can thank Jesus that you get it!

**i too cry at Mass now that i realize how much Jesus loves us! (I am a West Point grad, a man’s man but now i love our Mother Mary so much for showing me how to be honest and selfless, although i fail miserably every day!!!)

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora pro Nobis Peccatoribus!**

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It’s pretty awesome to be able to feel Christ’s presence that powerfully.

My husband cries at mass too… I love it… shows me how much he truly loves Jesus. 🙂

“pyro” I agree with the others. Your tears, are a gift from God… because He is causing you to feel His Presence so strongly. Your tears are a witness to those around you.

I know it must be more difficult for a man… because males are sometimes conditioned by society… against showing this kind of emotion. But that notion (men shouldn’t cry) is silly. Men are just as human, as we women! Tears are a fully human response to deep emotions.

It is recorded twice in the Gospels… that Our Lord Himself, wept. In Luke (19:41)… Jesus wept when He drew near the city of Jerusalem; and then again, upon learning of the death of His friend, Lazarus (John 11:35).

Just make sure you have a hanky available! God bless you! 🙂

You are more blessed than all of us! If only we all could have the same faith you do! You should thank God for your tears, and pray that those who judge you will be as blessed as you are!

I thank you all for your encouraging words, especially MarieVeronica.

St. Ignatius of Loyola – a man’s man if there ever was one – reportedly wept several times a day at Mass and at prayer.
That said, I can really empathise with the fact that this must be a really, REALLY hard cross to bear. When God asks us to give up attachment to health, wealth or whatever, being poor or sick doesn’t put us outside the pale of common humanity; but when God asks for a sacrifice of some aspect of our normality – like when He sent the illiterate teenage Joan of Arc to lead an army – it leaves us doubting as well as vulnerable.

I started doing this awhile back, too-off and on, though-and I really miss it when it doesn’t happen.
