Does anyone know any techniques that perhaps the Dessert fathers like St. Anthony may have used to overcome temptation. I know he was really tempted. Maybe John of the Cross had something similar.
Must have been devil’s food cake.Which desserts were they tempted by?
St. Anthony was tempted beyond normal. I’d hazard a guess and say that he fasted and prayed a lot. St. John of the Cross went through the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’. Being in the situation he was in, I would imagine that his prayer would have been non-stop internal prayer, and the conditions in which he kept were so extremely poor that he would have had next-to-no food from which to fast.Does anyone know any techniques that perhaps the Dessert fathers like St. Anthony may have used to overcome temptation. You know I put 3 s’s in there at first. I saw the mistake and removed one. I didn’t realize I left it with 2 s’s OMG I am going to be excommunicated.Which desserts were they tempted by?
Did St. Anthony ever leave any diaries or anything. I got to watch I could put dairy. Ok I believe that’s rightSt. Anthony was tempted beyond normal. Excellent ideas - in fact, get some real moldy, putrid food* and stick your nose in the bag and take a deep whiff of it. Then identify it with lust. That will do wonders.I’m not exactly sure where I read this from, but flesh/lust is like rotten food.
Maybe imagine moldy, putrid food when tempted?
Or temptations as cockroaches scurrying around that need to be stomped on or get sprayed with Raid.
Like fighting fire with fire — instead of imagining lustful things, actively utilize the mind to engage in battle (with insects. Or aliens).
Nah, 40 lashes with a damp Sacramentary and the asparagus. You know I put 3 s’s in there at first. I saw the mistake and removed one. I didn’t realize I left it with 2 s’s OMG I am going to be excommunicated.
I think his query should be taken seriously.Excellent ideas - in fact, get some real moldy, putrid food* and stick your nose in the bag and take a deep whiff of it. Then identify it with lust. That will do wonders.
Excited by various images? How about finding the ugliest pictures of people wounded, skin burned, in agony, deformed, suffering - then just meditate on them for a while. It’s not pleasant - and that’s the point!
*I’ve heard that crab meat left out in the sun for a few days smells so bad it can make you vomit. I haven’t actually tried it though.![]()
No, you misunderstood.I think his query should be taken seriously.
I’m not embarrassed.No, you misunderstood.
No need to feel embarrassed.![]()
