Hello,

I read this quote by the great Moral Theologian, Bishop, Doctor of the Church, Saint, and Writer, St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori:

Saint Alphonsus: “Oh! how often is bodily weakness made the pretext for unnecessary indulgence.”

Is he saying that people often excuse their overeating because they just say that they “need” it? Thank you.

What indicates to you that he is only/primarily speaking of overeating?

I can see that, but as the quote stands without its context, I can see it applying to other physical pleasures too - drinking, sex, so-called recreational substances, and even bodily necessities taken to luxurious or slothful extremes.

You are absolutely right. 👍

Here is the quote in its context:

Thanks, Google Books. 🙂

Thank you for the answer. I guess St Alphonsus was talking about religious overworrying about their health.

Fasting pre-suppose you understand the sinful act of overeating issues.
