Overrated Video games?

Gee I don’t know, even though I’ve only played FFVIII and watched FFVII: AC, I can relate to Cloud and Squall… a lot. :\

My personal calls on overrated games would be any Grand Theft Auto after the second one (in 2D it was a fun arcadey game, in 3D it’s just clunky until you get to GTA IV, and that one didn’t hold my interest for more than a few hours), and any hardcore racing simulator. I love the Burnout series, I want to have fun driving in a game, I don’t want to practice that one corner twenty times just to win a race.

GTA agter the 2nd? GTA 4 was amazing! Good graphics for a change and fun in the big city
 
OK here i go

Fable 2 (would have been a good game if Peter Molyneux didnt keep promising us the world and instead delivering what is left of Baghdad. The fable games are ok, just the over hype kills them)

Halo - main reason being they focused on multilayer more then the single player.

Dawn of war 2 - Frankly, im old school rts. Build a base, defenses, build enough tanks to steam role the map and attack. This one was to small. The pride of watching Leman Russ tanks, bane blade command tank supported by the many las bolts from the guardsman gone to watching your unit of 8 being torn apart by a unit of 3. also the control was horrible, how many times i lost units to not entering cover correctly oh youd be angry to.

Spore - WAY to kiddy, with controls and management for teens to adult

Gears of war 2 - “Maria! Maria!” Dom shut the hell up.

I could NEVER get into those. I just wish they’d stop.

OH and any need for speed. Mariokart is the ONLY racing game 🙂
 
I didn’t get into Halo until I played co-op with my husband. I like the story and liked that I could play a game with him. But I’m still not one for shooters. I also wanted to know what was going on in RVB.

Bioshock… creepy enough said.

Sonic… my husband loves it, but I find it annoying, especially Amy.

Grand Theft Auto… it’s just plain inappropriate.

well it’s understandable. Mario Kart is the greatest racing game of all time. It’s really been the same game since the 64 Version, just with better graphics, online play and other “upgrades”… that’s why the Wii version is the best version of the best Racing game of all time.

I loved number 7 and number 10(which was a great PS2 game), but I agree with you on the rest of the Final Fantasy Games, especially the last one, which was the worst of the lot. In fact I think 13 was an absolute turkey, I hope they rest that series for a while…

While the original Fable was good, but much too short, the sequel was mediocre at best. I like it in theory, but playing it was just downright dull.

CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE (both of them, as they’re the same game.)

that is all.

Also Halo is the best competitive shooter imo. If you don’t like halo, you probably don’t like the genre LOL
 
I actually am not a Nintendo fan, just not a fan of racing games I suppose. OH Crash Bandicoot Team Racing for PS1 was good too.
 
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Pokemon. I hated that game and I hated hearing that stupid music when my brother would always play it even more. However, I have seen a pika in the wild in real life and it looked quite cute just like the stupid little thing in the game and I can still hear that stupid pika, pikachu, in my head.

Oh, then there also was Diablo II. Everyone I knew was playing that game and people would tell me that if I liked Final Fantasy I would like Diablo II. First of all, I didn’t really like the idea of playing a game named after the Devil, and second of all, I just did not like the game.

Also, along the same lines as Diablo, I hated Warcraft, Starcraft, and all those other similar games. I never was a big fan of Halo either though the multiplayer was fun
 
There’s a distinct period where games crossed from the second to the third dimension, and looking at that period you can see some interesting lines being formed. Allow me to explain;

My brother-in-law and I are big time gamers. What makes it interesting is there’s a ten year age gap between us. I started with the Atari 2600 and arcade machines, he come of age during the PlayStation era. Nowhere is this more evident than our respective opinions in the RPG genre;

His pick for the best and most influential RPG of all time? Final Fantasy VII.

Mine? Chrono Trigger (also my pick for best game EVER). And if you’re keeping things strictly within Final Fantasy then I’d have to go with Final Fantasy V.

Most people my age (28) would pick with Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI. People his age (18) are more likely to pick Final Fantasy VII.

His favorite Mario game? Mario 64, although he played an extensive amount of Super Mario Galaxy. Mine is New Super Bros. for the Wii, because it combines elements from ALL of my favorite Mario games from the 2D era.

There’s a disconnect there which I beleive colors people’s opinions.

Which brings us to Mario 64; the reason WHY the game was hyped so much was because it was truly the first game to break the polygon barrier in such a fashion. Like it’s predecessors before it (SMB 1 and SMB 3 for the NES, SMBW for the SNES) it created a new standard. Although you may say it’s “overrated”, it might be due to hype backlash. But I’ll say right now though, that as someone who lived through the transition that all 3D platformers owe a debt of thanks to Mario 64 for paving the way. Look at the Sonic series as it stands right now versus how Mario has fared.

Anyway, as it pertains to the OP;
  • GTA Vice City. GTA III was a masterpiece that created a whole new genre (open world sandbox). Vice City, to me, seemed rushed and lacking in polish.
  • Final Fantasy VIII, which is the worse out one of ALL of the franchise IMHO.
  • Warcraft III, although I played Warcraft II online extensively (this was pre-Battle.net no less) so that definitely makes me biased. I didn’t like how much they changed up the game play (it really does seem like a RTS version of WoW).

@Pokemon

I loved the first few Pokemon games that came out (Silver being my favorite.) But I agree that they got a little more attention than they deserved.

As for Halo, I remember it being really big when I was in High School. A couple of people tried to get me into it, but it just wasn’t my thing.
