I recently learned about a “Human Life Amendment” to the Constitution that some pro-life politicians support. Does anyone have any information about it? Is there a way we can add our names to a petition in support of it? Any info is appreciated.

Yesterday, I received something in the mail as well. It was pretty well organized as it included a letter to send to both my US senators as well as my US representative, by name.

I did not have time to look at it closely last night, but I will tonight.

Hi rpp -

Thanks for responding. Just to let you know, I read about it in a Catholic prayer book I have. I wish I’d received something in the mail! 🙂 Anyway, I will do some more research online and see what I can find.

Overturning Roe v. Wade will truely take a miraculous change in the hearts and minds of a large number of Americans. Amending the Constitution is not an easy thing. Apart from the Bill of Rights, it has only happend 17 times in over 200 years. The founding fathers made ti difficult on purpose.

The first thing that would be needed would be for a 2/3’s majority in both houses of Congress to approve the amendment. Then, if this huge obstacle could be overcome, the amendment would need to be ratified by the legislatures of 3/4 (38 of 50) of the states.

Politically speaking, this is not possible unless the proposition has overwhelming popular support across a vast majority of the country.

By all means, write your Representative and Senators, and do it often. But we also need to talk to our friends, neighbors, and family members to get them to understand how important this issue is, and how evil it is to kill unborn babies. When I talk to my CCE students and tell them that more babies are aborted everyday than people were killed by the terrorists on 9-11 they are shocked. It is this generation (those who are currently 15 to 20) that we should be primarily targeting. Their hearts have not been as hardened as many older people.

Most importantly though, pray, pray, pray to our Blessed Mother that she will implore her Son to give all mothers the love for their babies that she has for hers.

There has not been a serious push for a human life amendment since the early 80s. At that time the controversy within the movement revolved around whether to turn the issue back to the states or whether to declare the unborn “persons”. I have heard nothing about the HLA for 20 to 25 years.

An Amendment to the Constitution is not needed. There is nothing that needs amending.

How are laws passed? Congress. The President signs it into law. The courts judge people according to the law. Where is abortion in the Constitution or previous law passed by Congress that permitted abortion? SCOTUS made Roe a law and they do not have authority in the Constitution to make law so it should be set aside. Why it isn’t I don’t know. The Sanctity of Life Act 2005 would overturn Roe.

You’re absolutely right.

The Supreme Court has taken upon itself authority that it does not legally have.

Read Mark Levin’s book, “Men in Black”.

Sure, but that wouldn’t end abortion in every state. An amendment would. The Sanctity of Life Act 2005 or the overturn of Roe v Wade by the SCOTUS would be a nice start though.
