OI-IUI: Ovulation Induction with Intrauterine Insemination

This treatment combines stimulation of ovulation (using a low dose of an injectable fertility drug) with artificial insemination of the partner’s semen into the uterus. The use of the fertility drug helps to ensure complete growth of the egg. Release of the egg (ovulation) can also be controlled more precisely to coincide with the time of insemination.

If the sperm is from husband, would the Catholic Church be OK with this?

(This procedure is different from IVF, because it does not involve embryoes that are likely to be deliberately destroyed.)

Please pray for couples trying to have a baby; including me and my wife.

From what I understand, any sex act other than the ‘natural’ sex act isn’t acceptable. I can relate to the struggle and will pray for you.

Anyone with more info, please weigh in.

My understanding was that this was an acceptable procedure if the sperm was collected in a condom with a hole in it during normal intercourse. A syringe could then be used to collect the excess semen and place it directly into the uterus. Ask this in the Ask An Apologist forum and I think they can direct you to a Catholic institution who deals with such questions.

One problem in general, aside from whether the use of perforated condoms are morally sound or not, is the introduction of a third party into the procreative process. This is assuming someone other than the husband and wife will be involved in the procedure to collect and inseminate all during the same overall context of marital union. If the two events are separated from each other, it is not permissible.

If it were me, and I was wanting a baby, I would do whatever I had to do. …no matter what anyone said.

Instead of Artifical CONTRA-ception…This sounds like artificial CON-ception.

I am a BIG Theology of the Body fan…I studied this work this past winter with a physician friend of mine and the book changed our lives completely…mostly in the area of marriage, sex and procreation… Prior to reading TOB both of us were in union with ROme on issues out of obedience…now after reading TOB we are illuminated as to why and really think it is beutiful THeology

No, this is not morally acceptable. I recommend reading the Encyclical Donum Vitae to understand the Church’s teaching on this subject.

I also suggest contacting Pope Paul VI Institute to consult with them. All of their treatments are moral.

Children are not possessions. They are persons who have inherent dignity-- that dignity demands they be treated as persons not as experiments, commodities, or property.

Adoption would be the perfect option here. Being pregnant is not the goal. Having a baby is the goal.
