I went to go see the movie a few days ago after friends of mine told me how cool it was. And I really liked it. However, I had a Catholic relative of mine in a way tell me that the movie was satanic and that it was a sin for me to watch it because it had witches, “magic” (fake magic of course), wizzards, etc and I was commiting a sin by watching it and liking it. However, the same person who told me that it was wrong also enjoys the original Wizard of Oz from 1939 which is really no different in regards to witches, magic, etc. Was I wrong to watch that movie? Am I wrong to like it? I mean, after all, it’s just fiction.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying works of fiction that have magical or fantastic elements. You’re fine.

No worries, if what she said were true, we couldn’t enjoy Lord of the Rings either, and Tolkien was a devout Catholic 😛

i have a relative, one that I don’t like to be around very often, who is NOT Catholic and would NEVER let her son watch Sword in the Stone (when he was like 6), probably because it had a “wizard” (albeit, a clumsy one and was more for comedic elements). This same relative told her daughters that Harry Potter was witchcraft (but let her one daughter see TWILIGHT…I don’t get it…Vampires is fine…but wizards are not?). I rented Sword in the Stone…its about the legend of King Arthur…its not about wizards and witchcraft.

Does this person also think Lord of the Rings is evil and satanic? Cause I am sure if he was alive, JRR Tolkein would correct him/her.

I might see Oz Great and Powerful…just not sure WHEN…

Yes all of those things youve mentioned above are satanic. Shes one of those people who thinks that everything in the modern world is a sin.

I’d be more worried about some of the non-fantasy-type movies that have destructive messages. Many films look like comedy or drama but they have meta-messages that are against Catholic teaching and are just plain destructive.

Ask yourself: what is the premise of this film? (The Bridges of Madison County was not about geography; it was about adultery.) What does the main character go through and how does it end? What does the writer believe? Does the writer or producer belong to a cult? I just read that a Tom Cruise movie lately is a way for Scientology to gain strength in a particular country or subgroup.-“Valkrie” was an attempt to win over the German people by portraying one of their heroes. Germany had been banning Scientology.

I know this seems a bit tedious but it’s good to look a bit deeper into entertainment. Of course this doesn’t mean avoid anything that involves an immoral act; but look clearly at what the morality is and how it is presented.

“Oz” was originally a sort of political satire but it has been rewritten many times in recent years with a different premise each time: “The Wiz”, “Wicked”, “Oz”. Each time it is written it takes on a different tone the reflects the author, the producer, and the times.

Is your family member a Fundamentalist Christian?

FYI, the original The Wizard of Oz is on the Vatican’s list “Some Important Films”, released for the centennial of the first motion picture in 1995, under the category “Art”. It would not have been included if the pontifical commission which compiled the list had considered it to be morally offensive.
