Hi all,

I hope I am posting under the correct topic.

It’s my dear Mum’s funeral on Friday (I’m in the UK and it’s 3am on Thursday). I am writing a eulogy to say during her Mass and I’d like to include a Padre Pio prayer as she was a Padre Pio devotee.

Does anyone know of any appropriate prayers I could say?

Thanks in advance.

Eulogies are not permitted at Catholic Funeral Masses.
Totally correct. If anything some words may be given at the end of Mass after the dismissal. If the priest allows anything else he is allowing liturgical abuse.

As far as your question, I do know one prayer which is found on the back of a Padre Pio prayer card I have. You would have to before hand note the intention of the prayer is for the repose of the soul of your mother (which is obvious, though this prayer isn’t specifically for that… you could say something like “So now, for the repose of the soul of my mother, I will say the following prayer” or “prayers” if you add the second one I have below), and please insist to the priest that you will only say it, along with anything else, after the Mass.
O Saint Pio, witness of faith and love. We praise your life as a Capuchin friar, as a priest and as a loyal witness of Christ. Your life was marked by suffering, and we call you “A crucified without a Cross.”
Love moved you to care for the sick, to attract sinners and to deeply live the mystery of Eucharist and forgiveness. You powerfully interceded with God throughout your life, and continue to do so from the heavens, by doing good and interceding for us. We wish to rely on your help. Pray for us. We are asking this from you for Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
You could also add the following appropriate prayer (which I myself have said for your mother).
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

I would just like to give you my deepest sympathies in the loss of your mother. I’ll be praying for her and your family. May God bless you!

I was able to offer a few words at
the graveside to those present at
my wife’s funeral. May you be able
to do so, too, I pray.

So sorry about your mother…may she rest in peace.
Here’s a link to some prayers, my favorite is the first one: Stay With Me Lord" which she undoubtedly must have prayed…it’s one of the most famous of his prayers.

Again, my sincere condolences.

Thank you everyone for your replies and kind thoughts.

I can not comment on whether or not it is liturgical abuse. The Mass is at our local Cathedral and every funeral Mass I have attended there a family member/friend has given a eulogy.

PianistClare and ServusHumilis - thank you so much. You have both been very helpful.

Tomorrow will be a very hard day.
