This scares me half to death. This morning I read an excerpt from the internet (christtotheworld.blogspot.com/2010/05/saint-padre-pio-vs-devil.html) that claims that the Cursed One can impersonate Our Lady. Here it is in full:

The Devil attacked Padre Pio with numerous types of temptations. Padre Augustine also confirmed that the Devil appeared to him under many different forms. "The Devil appeared as young girls that danced naked, as a crucifix, as a young friend of the monks, as the Spiritual Father or as the Provincial Father; as Pope Pius X, a Guardian Angel, as St. Francis and as Our Lady.” The Devil has also appeared in his horrible forms with an army of infernal spirits. There were other times when Padre Pio was approached by the Devil but without any apparition. He was troubled with deafening noises and covered with spittle, etc. Padre Pio succeeded in freeing himself from these attacks of the Devil by invoking the name of Jesus.

Do you believe he (the Padre) really saw Lucifer impersonating Our Lady, or was he hallucinating? Or do you think he was lying? I for one cannot think of a single good reason why God would allow this terrible blasphemy by Satan (impersonating the Blessed Mother) and so I was at first disinclined to believe the passage. After recovering from my initial shock I now believe it, though as before I still can’t think of a single reason why God had given permission for this terrible blasphemy. What are your thoughts?

It would be folly to underestimate the power of the fallen angel Lucifer. He is very powerful and his hatred knows no bounds. I believe full well that he could take on those forms mentioned if he chose too. At the same time however, I believe that God would provide us ample grace to be able to see through them. Something as evil as satan will never be able to fully mask himself in the spirit of goodness and light. Anyone blessed with receiving an apparition of Mary (obviously very rare occurrence) but I believe anyone who is able to meet Our Lady would be able to tell the difference right away between the Holy Mother and the beast. Just an opinion though. I’ve never experienced an apparition before and doubt I ever will. It is sufficient to look upon the Lord’s face every mass I attend 😉 God Bless

I think he could. I read that some Bishops when confronted with so-called apparitions of Our Lady asked the visionaries to affirm that she came from Jesus, because the devils could not stand His Holy Name.

Well in the Bible it does say

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” - Matthew 24:24

In fact the Church itself believes Satan can transform into a false Mary if he wanted to. That’s why when a Marian apparitions comes their way, the Church has to make sure the apparition not a demonic deception (along with make sure it’s not a hoax/staged illusion, the people aren’t just seeing things, it’s not explained it’s not explained by natural causes etc. etc.)

St. Pio did not lie. That’s the enemy’s job. And others have said similar things. This is why the Church investigates these things.

Oh, I have absolutely no doubt that Satan is capable of this. God has allowed him reign here on Earth, and he will do as much as possible to misguide the deeply faithful.

Remember, that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bend – including Satan’s. So, yes, discern the spirits.

God bless.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15:

“For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”

My comment is that Padre Pio an other saints were still able to some how tell if it was the devil in a false appearance or not. I would imagine it could be hard to tell but I guess one must listen carefully to the content of the message of the person appearing. And see if it is in accord with God or not.

Sometimes it is very easy to get excited about various apparitions and private revelations and it is very, very, difficult to discern where all these things come from. Therefore, it is best to follow only the Church approved private revelations (for example, Fatima, Lourdes). It is also important to realize that these revelations are private and nobody is required to believe in them. The public revelation of God ended with the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles and various letters included in the Bible. All we need for our eternal salvation is in this public revelation, the guidance of the Church, and the seven sacraments. Therefore, do not needlessly worry about the visions of Padre Pio or what various apparitions say. Follow the Church, partake in the sacraments often (especially the Eucharist and Confession) and you will be fine.

Wise words. My thanks 🙂

The miracle of the sun at Fatima was a public miracle:

“It was confirmed by an unprecedented public miracle, the Miracle of the Sun, which occurred at precisely the moment Lucia said it would. More than 70,000 people, including Masons, communists and atheists, saw the sun, contrary to all cosmic laws, twirl in the sky, throw off colors and descend to earth. The event was reported in newspapers around the world, including the New York Times.”–http://www.fatima.org/whyfatima.htm

It seems to me that these experiences are likely to be the result of a psychological problem. Was Padre Pio ever given the opportunity for scientific psychiatric evaluation?

Don’t speak of a confirmed saint that way. It’s gross irreverence.

I believe that the enemy very well may do so. But a true devotee to Mary will never been fooled. Our Lady would never instruct us in anything contrary to Christ. If Satan did appear to Saint Pio as Our Lady, he obviously was able to distinguish between this false mask and the true beauty and splendour of Our Queen.

So do you believe 1) No saints ever had psychological problems? 2) No one can be truly good, and therefore become a saint, if they have psychological problems? 3) Saints may have had psychological problems but if so we should not speak of them? 4) Other Saints had psychological problems but not Padre Pio?

My comment was what I genuinely consider to be the most likely explanation. i am happy to be dissuaded from that view on the basis of evidence. But I do not think it is reasonable to give more orders about the things on which i may express a view. I realise that lack of belief is distressing for some Catholics, but I always try to avoid offence while still expressing my opinion. If my post was offensive, I apologise for this. Prehaps you could PM me with some guidance on how to better express my thoughts as a person who does not believe.

I’ve been browsing online more than 1 hour nowadays, yet I by no means found any fascinating post like yours. i really appreciate your content. The topic has really peaks my interest. I am going to bookmark your site and keep checking for new information. My site is about games. It’s pretty value enough for me. In my opinion, if all site owners made just right content material as you probably did, the net might be much more helpful than ever before

Sure satan can impersonate Mary, why not?
All the time satan impersonates God anyway.
If he even that bold to impersonate God himself, it is just a play for him to impersonate the saints, Mary included.

It might have well been a public miracle, but it was not a public revelation in the sense that the Catholic Church understands it. The public revelation of God ended with the death of the last apostle. I really do not aim to diminish the miracle of Fatima, after all, the matters of Fatima were investigated by the Church and confirmed to be genuine. But it is very important to understand that 1. Events of Fatima are at the level of private revelation. 2. Belief in this miracle or any other events of Fatima is not ne essary for our eternal salvation.

I do not want to derail this thread, so if you would like to discuss this further, please PM me or make a new thread.

Yes, there is a book that recently came out about that from Ignatius Press. I can’t think of the title, a friend loaned it to me and she has it back now. Investigation was quite extensive!

Yehuda Dion,

“Be not afraid”! Keep in mind that Padre Pio was a very holy person and becoming even holier. The Lord sends tests according to our capacity. Padre Pio had a great capacity for discerning such things and the Lord tests people to make them stronger.

The Holy Spirit is a gentleman in the sense that we will not be tempted in ways that would harm us. The Lord knows what our capacity is and how to test different people in their various stages of the spiritual journey.

God bless you!
