I saw a short documentary on German TV in which they said that Padre Pio, during his lifetime, was rather unpopular among the higher ranking clergy and even accused of being a charlatan or attention seeker by Church authorities. They said that it was only after his death and in view of his extreme popularity among normal people that he became fully accepted by the Church. Unfortunately the documentary didn’t go into details and back up these claims so I am sceptical.

But is there any truth to these accusations? Or is it just some cheap journalist trying to fill airtime?

“rather unpopluar” might be a stretch, but EVERYONE is disliked by atleast SOMEONE. It’d be unhuman to be universally liked. There are people who were bothered by Mother Teresa…even within the church.

I’m sure that there were some concerend with his popularity while alive. If the church paid better attention and put a tighter squeeze on popular priests these days Msgr. Fuchek and Fr. Corapi would still be Catholic priests.
