What do you think of the way St Padre Pio celebrated Reconciliation? He was tough

St Pio was only tough because he had the gift of seeing souls as they really were.
If he saw their eternal salvation was in danger, then he was sometimes firm, and later many of these persons returned to make full and proper Confessions and to amend their lives.
If only there were such priests as him for us to go to we would receive true and full guidance for our souls. I truly wish I had such a Confessor as he, then I would have a sure compass for my soul.

The people who he did this to - at least those who recorded/talked about it - seemed to think that it helped them much, so I guess he knew what he was doing.

I’m not sure it would be as advisable today in most situations - and he might well agree, for all I know… but his purpose was to get people to see that real change of heart was essential to conversion!

Never having received the sacrement of confession from Padre Pio, I can’t comment.

Remember that he had spiritual gifts not given to many, and of course, as his sanctity became known people may have interpreted things he said differently than they would have if their own priest said it.

Best advice is to find a good examine, prepare yourself well for confession, and then heed the advice of your priest. Do not go out looking for an “experience” every time you go to confession.

I heard an interview with Gian Carlo **Menotti **on the radio some years back. He told of visiting Padre Pio with a woman friend. She went in to see Padre Pio. When she came back she said that he slapped her face. Menotti said that he didn’t ask her why, but decided not to go in himself.

He just related that in a low conversational tone, and didn’t add anything. Wish I knew the rest of that story.

From things I’ve read about him and watched about him on TV, he was very strict on the penitents. He even insisted on women wearing skirts/dresses that went 8 inches below the knee or more to the confessional. At the same time, he must had an extraordinary gift to make sure people made a good confession & left nothing out at all.
