About 7 months ago I moved to this area to start a new job. This area is bursting with population growth, houses and commercial centers are going up all over the place, and I thought that surely with all the people in this area, with all the places to meet people, I surely would make some friends and start a new life.
The actual fact is that this has not happened at all, and while I was depressed beforehand, I’m even more so now. I haven’t really met many people at work. I’m my mid-twenties. There are numerous kind people with whom I work, but I haven’t really developed a friendship with any of them.
When I’m at home, I try to get out as much as possible and not stay in my townhouse. I go to bookstores, restaurants, libraries, coffee shops, my church–any place to possibly run into new people. I run across many, many people, but I feel like I’m a fish out of water. I can’t really connect with any people here–it’s like I think different from everyone else. When I go to most places, 60%+ of the people are speaking in a language other than English. The few people speaking English are usually families. There’s really no sense of community here, since everything is brand new.
In any case, I’m thinking of moving back to where I’m from. At least there I felt comfortable. The job I have I don’t particularly care for. I have regular nightmares concerning it, and stress out over the weekend about each coming week. I thought that in coming down here I’d at least make friends around the neighborhood, but I’m finding everybody to be pretty much enclosed and guarded… I thought I might date, but even after signing onto two dating sites, I haven’t met anybody.
The worst is the weekend. I go out to different places on Friday nights, hoping to meet people. I never do. Saturdays I go out to various places again. No luck meeting any people. So, I go to church Sunday, make it through, but find that I’m the only 20-some person at the church and feel left out. So, Sunday I go home, extremely depressed and lonely, and having nobody with whom to talk. I try reading, since I used to enjoy reading, but I can’t focus because of the loneliness and depression. So, I try walking, but I’m in a lot of physical pain as well, and I can’t walk very far before it’s too painful.
Maybe a gun really is the answer.
