On Sunday, Pope Francis will canonise Marie-Alphonsine Danil Ghattas and Mariam Baouardy. The two nuns exemplify the link between God and his saints, founded on love and service. Patriarch Emeritus Sabbah warned that Christians cannot escape history, because “Escaping history means escaping God’s will.” In the East, the 19th century gave us saints. The 21st century will be a century of martyrs.
