I actually downloaded The King’s Singers’ recording of the Gloria from the same Mass by Palestrina. Their harmonizing is out of this world; they’re maybe about six to eight members in all, but they sound like a four-part, all-male schola. I love listening to the voices of The King’s Singers in this piece. Above all, the Gloria as part of the Missa Papae Marcelli is a taste of Heaven for me. :harp:

And this comes from a Catholic who’s happy in a Franciscan Ordinary Form parish, and who loves to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” through song in the choir (no, we’re not professionals, but when the Holy Spirit pours out an anointing…“WOW” is all I can say about it). ^^

The king’s singers are made up of six men. I love their Palestrina performances.

I’ll check them out. The Tallis Scholars have really impressed me with this recording, though. 😃

Thank you for refreshing my memory on how many make up The King’s Singers, countertenor. But yes, I do recall that they are all men. And since I had heard them before, it was how I recognized the group even though the downloaded track doesn’t list exactly who recorded it.

I had actually looked up an album of classical music on Ruckus’ Web site, and found the Gloria from the Missa Papae Marcelli as one of the tracks listed. I’ll have to try and see if I can find any more Palestrina recordings by The King’s Singers. It was the Gloria, though, that got me hooked on this Mass setting.

I know exactly what you mean. It’s amazing. I love getting to experience this setting at mass. I also really love Byrd’s masses.

Don’t forget Tomas de Victoria - We have his Missa O Quam Gloriososum in our repertoire. I can get “lost” singing that.

I agree. When I visited England, I had my CD walkman with Palestrina playing when I went to Canterbury and other historic Churches. Magnificent! 👍

That is one of my favorite pieces to sing for mass. It has been about two years since I’ve sung it in a mass, but sometimes, we get together and just sing it because it’s so beautiful. (yes my friends and I can be music nerds 😃 )
