So, today my Parochial Vicar tried something different than what he did at the Saturday evening Mass. This is how it went:
He did the introduction to the entrace “Dear friends in Christ, for five weeks of Lent…”, blessed the branches at the table where he was standing at in the back, read the Gospel reading, then addressed the people by saying: “Let us go forth praising Jesus our Messiah as did the crowds who welcomed him into Jerusalem.”
Then the hymn “All Glory, Laud and Honor” begins, the incense server and cross bearer processed to the altar, and the presider and one altar server who was carrying holy water went around the church and sprinkled holy water to bless the branches.
I see nothing wrong with this, but is it allowed? Typically before the Gospel, he blesses the branches laying on the table in the back of the church, goes around the church blessing all of the people’s branches, then goes back for the Gospel, the address, and then the procession begins.
