I listen to Pandora very frequently in my day. However, I have noticed lately that their ads are getting totally out of control. I listen to things like Celtic Women or a Christian music station, or sometimes classical, but they are pasting ads for the nuva ring everywhere!! As if this weren’t bad enough, now they are lambasting me with plan B ads. I have just about had it. Is there anything someone can do to stop these types of ads, or at least contact them to let them know that, hey! Not everyone wants to hear about their choice of contraception this week?!?!

I just can’t imagine why they think someone who has created stations like “Christian music” or “ave Maria” really wants to hear about Plan B…

That’s annoying but can’t you just ignore them? They’ll go away eventually and be replaced with (hopefully) non offensive ads. Le’ts hope they don’t last as long as the infamous 1 RULE FOR A FLAT STOMACH: OBEY ads 😉

I was adopting that approach, but the Nuva Ring ads have been going on for a good 4 months or so now. I’m just getting fed up.

What is Pandora and why must you listen?

:amen:
Pandora is a free and legal online radio that lets you listen to only music YOU deem good and appropriate. To continue being free, it has ads spaced every so often between songs.

I’ve never actually had those kidns of ads pop up. I get car ads and mobile phones.

Contact them!!! Let em know!

I think lastfm.com is a good alternative. It’s the same basic premise (internet radio based on your preferences), but there are far fewer advertisements. None of the advertisements I’ve seen there have been offensive (just cell phone companies and things like that). There’s also lala.com, which has no advertisements. You can listen to any song or album once (I like to listen to all of the gregorian chant albums!), and you get “credits” for free web music. All of this is properly licensed, and there is no copyright issue.

Wow…I actually got a response from them from contacting them:
Thanks for writing and for the feedback. All our ads meet generally held standards for print and media advertising. These ads could be displayed on outdoor billboards or on commercial television. Nevertheless I can understand that you might not want to see some types of ads in a work or family environment.
Our ads are targeted, so the registration data you provide has an effect on what ads you see and hear.
I have a few suggestions that might help if you don’t like the ads you see:
  1. Change your age in the account settings: Click the ‘account’ link in the upper right corner of the Pandora home page. Then put in a year that makes you appear to be under 18 or over 60. Under 18 will get rid of all ads for liquor, and other adult products as well as the more risqué fashion and fragrance ads. Over 60 won’t lose the liquor ads but most everything else will be pretty sedate.
  1. You can also upgrade to Pandora One at a very modest $36/year to cut out the advertising altogether. You can find the ‘upgrade’ option in the upper right hand corner of the main page. You can find out more about Pandora One here: pandora.com/pandora_one
Hope this is helpful. Thanks so much for listening!

I’ve noticed the same thing! A while back, there was very graphic ads for some Roman historical drama, and my whole screen was enveloped by some barely clothed lady. I kept skipping songs to get rid of it, but it always seemed to pop back up.

Thanks for e-mailing them! I like that idea. I think I’ll put in myself as a 95 year old woman, maybe that will keep the birth control and suggestive ads off my screen!

If that doesn’t work, you might try Slacker radio (slacker.com). Its basically the same thing. I have found the ads there are more harmless, but there is always someone’s belly showing because of some weightloss add. Those don’t bother me as much, especially since its pretty clearly a photoshop creation!

Good idea camerong.

I am just personally getting fed up with the whole media. I mean, I feel like I can’t watch primetime TV, go see a movie, or even walk down the street with my nephew without getting lambasted with incredibly sexual advertising, or inundated with immoral sexual themes. (nudity, immodesty, sexual purity, etc…) Now it’s on my internet radio, youtube, and even inbedded sites such as NBC.com!!!

It just sucks when you are trying to listen to an internet christian radio station with your young niece or nephew in the room and the station suddenly breaks into a bunch of women sitting around talking about sex and contraceptives. I’ve made more than one mad dash for the computer in my day. Both at work and at home.

I just can’t help but lose all sympathy for male friends of mine who whine about there not being any good “marriageable” women out there, then turn around and applaud advertisements such as Calvin Klien or Victoria’s Secret, or support and encourage a woman who debases herself. I have to bite my tongue so as not to say “well, you get what you asked for.” 😦

I don’t know if this will help or not but here are a few suggestions:
  • Download Mozilla Firefox and when that is done, download the Adblock Plus extension. This blocks all ads on the Internet that are not there as the result of spyware or adware.
  • Go to www.download.com and find a good, free spyware/adware scanner and remover. Scan your computer using the “thorough scan” or “complete scan” option and then remove anything that you don’t trust. This will remove any ads that are popping up as a result of spyware or adware.
  • Try a different online radio service.
God bless and I sincerely hope that this helps. 👍

Hi. Have you tried www.earbits.com? They are kind of like Pandora but they have no commercials and play mostly independent music. It’s pretty much the best place to listen to free music online.

It is very upsetting to see single men in the area in which we live promoting their singleness when my 16 and 14 year old daughters tune in to listen to pandora. More upsetting is Pandora facilitating this…Does anyone have Pandora’s complaint contact info or there an attorney that would like to step in?

When I listen to Pandora it likes to wallpaper my whole screen with Match.com ads of “local singles” or whatever. Most of the time I’m not looking at the screen. But I find it irritating when I do. I wish there were a way to tell them that I’m married and not interested. Like if I can give a “thumbs down” to “Benny and the Jets”, I should also get to give a thumbs down to the Match.com ads. The audio ads tend to be more for cars and local universities so at least those aren’t offensive.

If you change gender on Pandora to male, and age to something like 60+, you may find yourself getting very few ads at all. That’s what I did, and about the only ads I get are to sign a petition related to the Voting Rights Act, and sometimes ads for property in Florida (really!).

You can also subscribe to Pandora Plus (or whatever it’s called) for a few bucks a month and get no ads at all.

OP - Thank you for posting this question! We have let our daughter listen to pandora and we didn’t know about the suggestive ads among the cell phone ads. Thanks for the posting on changing the pandora user setting, too!

Peace.

I’m on Pandora as myself (male, geezer); I’m going to have to start paying attention to the ads. Right now the only one I can remember is for Alabama Power, and that’s totally innocuous.
