This thread has taken a turn for the graphic, so I think I am going to duck out after this final post here. …

My :twocents:.
For an objective review of the conversation, I suggest one can click on the blue arrow in my post #127 snippet above to jump back to the beginning of that particular exchange and just read for themselves how the conversation evolved up to now.

My bad and my apologies. I read what you wrote differently. This still begs the question what is “well-fitting” pants? Where do you find these pants?

The fashion industry has reinvented the woman’s waist by creating hip-huggers. Do you know how difficult it is to find an ordinary pair of pants these days? Especially for children! Actually, this invention of hip-huggers also shows how clothing makers are trying with all they have to make women’s clothing more like men’s. A woman’s waist and a man’s waist are different.
Apology accepted. 🙂

As far as the rest of your post, I wish I could help you there, but all I can say is that while it is a difficult thing to find proper slacks for certain age groups sometimes (my 13 year old daughter for example), it can be done if one is very patient.

Your comments about finding well-fitting slacks reminded me of another thread I started on CAF about a year ago.

I agree with you.I do not like hip-huggers either.A good source of different styles in slacks is Penny’s catalogue.🙂

Oh yes, that is just nasty! I was on a bowling league and one of my teammates wore jeans that she exposed a little to much ‘down yonder’ and it just grossed me out. I don’t see why people like those. Doesn’t it get drafty?

I am quite shocked and insulted at the amount of parroted phrases reffering to MEN as being little more than lust-mad hoodlums who will think of a woman in a sexual manner for wearing trousers. Please give men more credit! Men are not animals. They are created in dignity along with women to be in the image of God. 👍
I’m a man and I can attest to the fact that… yes, we are mere animals. Even moreso the men w/o God in their life. Men have different drives than women, we are turned on initially by sight. It doesn’t even matter what the face looks like - if there’s a provacative form - the face will be the last thing looked at as the male drools over the feminine form.

A Godly man will keep his passions in check with the help of the bridle of God’s Grace but the drives are still there. He will have the ability to know when temptation arrives and to avert his eyes before his passions and curiosity are aroused.

The un-Godly man has no bridle on his passions or his lustful stares except for the law.He is nothing more than beast when it comes to sexual impulse. He will seemingly ‘court’ a woman - wine and dine- for months on end if necessary with the hopes of getting the goods in the end. And it will be a ‘victory’ when it finally happens. But an unGodly man has already committed the acts in his heart many times before the physical act takes place. Nothing stops a man, who is not restrained by the bridle of Divine Grace, from being with a woman either in reality or at least in his head. This is what women must understand when Christ talks about a man who looks lustfully upon a woman has already committed the deed in his heart. If you dress immodestly and then walk through the grocery store, Wal-Mart - whatever - you have, at any given moment, multiple people undressing you (and worse) in their heads. A man without Grace will rarely look and be please by the look alone - no, the pleasure comes from imagining the deed.

Thus the importance that a woman does not present herself as an entree on the plate of the man’s mind and in charity she must do her part to remain modest for the sake of her brother’s fallen nature.

Since this thread is specifically about pants vs. dresses/skirts and not really about provocative fashions, I have to ask: In your view, does a woman “present herself as an entree on the plate of the man’s mind” simply by wearing slacks that fit her properly? In my view, she is doing “her part to remain modest for the sake of her brother’s fallen nature,” but since you are a man, I recognize that you might have a different opinion.

First, you have to realize that you drew a distinction between modern slacks and ‘provacative fashions’ yet they are one and the same but most have become to desensitized to realize it. My post was not about “provocative fashion” by contemporary standards but rather the ordinary dress of today’s women which is more provocative than many realize.

But to answer your question, certainly some pants may be more modest than others but in general it’s like picking the lesser of two evils - slacks are simply more revealing and leave less to the imagination than skirts or dresses. A woman usually thinks just because the slacks they wear are not as tight fitting as the obviously offending attire that somehow that makes them acceptable.

Something else to keep in mind is that what you are considering non-offending attire was considered offensive to your grandmother or great grandmother. The tight and revealing clothes that you find offensive now (as many of our youth sling on these days) will be even less offensive to the successive generation but yet what society accepts does not make it less appealing to man’s sexual appetite. Your daughters will be the one growing up and accepting these new fashions. Somewhere you have to open your eyes and realize the harm being done.

I remember my wife had a couple of ladies stop by the house to drop off some gifts for the new baby. My wife had picked up a few copies of Colleen Hammond’s book to give out and she mentioned it to the ladies who were on the floor crawling around with the new baby. One lady asked what the book was about and when my wife responded, “dressing modestly” the lady just laughed and said “I don’t have to worry about that” then proceeded to get back down on all fours, playing with baby, exposing a large section of lower back and slacks that, while certainly not ordinarily revealing, nevertheless left nothing to the imagination in revealing the posterior region right in front of my face - I had to immediately avert my eyes and think of something different. Women simply are oblivious to this or, as some here amply demonstrate, they know but do not care or will not “be told” what to do. But the irony of the whole situation was a little amusing.

This and your previous post were excellent explanations, thank you. You are correct though, with each generation what is acceptable continues to morph down the road to destruction, and you are also right, it isn’t seen by us. Why would someone who has worn jeans, slacks, shorts, bikini’s, tank tops, etc., all their lives come to the conclusion as adults that these articles of clothing were inmodest. The idea of modesty by society’s standards continues to relax as time goes on. Few will understand this.

There is a distinction because it is possible to find modest slacks even today. I am talking about a simple pair of slacks that fit well, not tightly, not low cut or hip huggers, not provocative in any way, just a pair of pants.

Seems to me that in the situation you describe, the woman’s attire of slacks was not objectionable per your words–“slacks that, while certainly not ordinarily revealing”–it was her behavior that was immodest. I see that as another issue entirely.

Makes perfect sense to me … fits right in my post awhile ago about how we can’t look to current society to determine what is appropriate.

I agree! Please stop wearing pants and something a little more long and flowy so I don’t get side tracked as much, please.

Thank you.

I missed this before, but I see now that you think slacks, EVEN if they fit properly, can be problematic because they define better and leave less to the imagination than skirts/dresses. As an apparently fairly conservative man sharing your thoughts, you have given me something to consider. Though it still seems a stretch to me that a woman wearing a pair of slacks might be a near occasion of sin for a man UNLESS the man chooses for it to be, I’ll concede that I might need to reflect a bit more and perhaps revise my opinion slightly.

I’m not a feminist at all. I’m pretty conservative and I certainly don’t have the mindset that I will not “be told” what to do. I follow the teachings of Holy Mother Church. However, up until a few days ago, I was unaware that anyone thought it was sinful for women to wear slacks. I am still unsure about what the teachings of the Church actually are on this matter. I have a general idea of Colleen Hammond’s thoughts on the matter, but I don’t even know if she is Catholic.

Hi. I’m new here, but I’ve been lurking for awhile, and this thread caught my interest, enough to get me to register and try to participate in the discussion.

In response to this:

I must say, REALLY? You are in fact asserting that men are animals and have no control over their thoughts and, by extension of the fact that they are mere animals, actions?

If such were the case, how on earth could a man be held responsible for sinning, then? If it’s something they have no control over they surely can not be held accountable. And if such thoughts were indeed sins, then it must be the womans fault, because the male animal can not help himself.

You say that “the face will be the last thing looked at as the male drools over the feminine form.” If that’s the case, and given your assertion that men are animals, I guess women need to make sure that no part of their form can be seen? Because they will have then caused a man to sin? And how can I go out in mixed company, knowing that if I wear anything more fitted than a sack, all the men will be drooling (and worse!) over my shape and thus my mere presence is causing them all to sin?

And I guess I better start carrying mace to fight off any animal who decides that having me in his head isn’t enough? And that would be my fault too, since the poor animal has nothing to stop him from doing whatever he wants.

I think you are giving men too little credit. What happened to humans having dignity and being specially created in the image of God? Surely that would imply that all men, Christian or not, are above mere animals and thus able to control their thoughts? Whether they WANT to or not is a completely different question than having the lack of ability, which is what it appears you are asserting.

Maybe I’ve misunderstood, what you meant, and if I did, please explain what you were meaning. Yes, women need to dress modestly, (and I don’t think we’ll ever all agree on exactly what that entails), but claiming that men are animals robs them of the very thing that makes them human and places any fault for the man’s sin solely on the woman because if he was having those thoughts then she MUST have been dressed provocatively.

RosaryCrusaser;it must be such a burden to be a man, surrounded by women in the street, at work, etc,and having no control whatsover over your impulses. You put all your hope on women dressing modestly otherwise you are lost.
But of course I believe that is your experience. You cannot and I believe must not generalize and say that all men are like that. Simply because you do not know it or have a way to know it.

The Church, while not having an official stance, does permit women to wear pants at the Vatican and a Pope, over 1000 years ago wrote it does not matter that a man or a woman wears pants or doesn’t wear pants as it’s what is in one’s heart that matters. No matter what, no Church document or Saint or apparition has come out against women wearing pants.

And, once more on Colleen Hammond: for those of us who do not like her let me explain, again, why we do not. We find that she is as sensationalistic, manipulative, and anti as a Jack Chick tract. She’s muddling the facts, writting what she believes as truth, and only wants people to think like her because she is uncomfortable with anybody else’s differing opinion. Also, like Chick, apparently she has mentioned the Free Masons as being more sinister than they are, what with trying to…blur the gender lines or something. I cannot give credit to a woman who believes conspiracy theories and indoctrination are the reason women wear pants.

Furthermore, men that say that slacks are so revealing, please do what you preach.
Start using a tunic or robe, because you say that pants show the shape, and that may cause us women to sin also. And please do not tell me how women are (visual or not visual)for you do not know, remember, you are not a woman.)Not even I could tell you for I am only 1 woman and women differ, just as men do.
Would you do that for us?Wear a tunic from now on to save us from sinning?

Actually, I had posted earlier in this thread about Padre Pio turning women away from confession for not wearing long skirts.

Yes, but, he didn’t come out against it.

Also, that site says that women aren’t allowed to wear pants at the Vatican, which, is not true.

And, for those who can’t be bothered clicking on the link:

"Women should wear skirts and dresses; they should not generally wear pants (although there may be some exception for certain sports, certain types of work, etc). Women should have longer hair than men; a woman’s hair style should be feminine (not masculine and not androgenous). Women should dress and groom themselves in a feminine manner, to show that they accept the place God has given women in Creation, in society, in the family, and in the Church.

Modesty is a separate issue. A woman wearing modest pants still offends God, not by lack of modesty, but by dressing like a man. A woman wearing an immodest skirt or dress offends God less than a woman wearing a modest pair of pants. The offense of a woman wearing pants is an offense against the very order which God built into Creation and humanity. The offense of a woman wearing men’s clothing is called an abomination by Sacred Scripture. When a woman dresses and acts like a man, it is an offense against the very order which God built into Creation and human nature. God is offended, even more so, when women dress and act like men in churches and during holy Mass.

By comparison, when a woman wears a short skirt, or a tight dress, her offense is only a matter of degree (the same skirt, if lengthened, might be considered modest). Such an offense is not intrinsically disordered – it does not contradict or rebel against the fundamental order which God gave to Creation and humanity."

Not to be disrespectful, but the link you provided to Ron Conte’s site isn’t really very helpful in this discussion. Conte might be a good Catholic, but he is a layperson and not an authority of the Church. (He is a member of CAFand does post here sometimes. I do agree with some of what he posts (i.e, NFP is the way to go for a married couple and the use of ABC is intrinsically evil) and I have read quite a bit of his writing at his site, but Holy Mother Church is my authority and guide.) An excerpt from his bio is below and his entire “Brief Bio” may be found at this link catholicplanet.com/bio.htm:
