It’s not so easy to go there tho-and, again, who decides exactly what’s necessary or not? We can argue baptism all day long, and we know that God can override the need for things like sacraments if He so chooses, and yet Jesus gave us a directive on it, and, “If you love Me you’ll obey my commands”. So the Church has always heeded that from the beginning; the doctrine is wrapped up in both Scripture and Tradition, in both the eastern and western Church. So I’m not going there anyway

In any case, the need for a single authority to decide on matters of faith and morals when questions or controversies come up is a very practical need, and one, I think, that God would provide for. We know He established a Church, that received and was to preach one gospel, having “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” Eph 4:5. Any disunity within Christianity itself is a plea for a means to correct it.
