Papal apology

Today I watched the news and heard about the apology on behalf of the Church for the residential schools and treatment of the native peoples.
I was wondering why it took the church so long to apologize for this.
They stated in the news story that all the other denominations apologized earlier.
what do you guys think?

The Catholic Church has previously paid $79 million in compensation for abuses. I guess a formal apology from the Vatican never given, because it was never requested until Thursday, when a delegation of First Nations representives met with the pope. However, individual Catholic dioceses have apologized over the years.
