For the benefit of those of us who are ignorant about the Roman Catholic church and it’s inner workings, could you please post formal documentary evidence of the authority of a bishop of Rome to unilaterally intervene in another Sui Iuris church?
BTW, what is your position on the Papal authority vis a vis an Ecumenical Council?
Thank you,
Michael
Dear brother in Christ Anthony,You said that the pope should respect and protect the ordinate and immediate prerogatives of the other bishops, and that there should be minimal interference, and that the pope should not interfere on his own initiative.
Now,when a bishop is teaching something which contradicts or downplays Catholic doctrine,as Eastern and North African bishops are apparently doing,is the pope is bound to respect and protect that bishop’s ordinate and immediate prerogatives?
Did Pope Stephen have to respect St. Cyprian’s prerogatives on the issue of re-baptism?
As to the extent of the pope’s interference, that again depends on the situation. There are always bishops with heretical opinions and engaging in schismatic actions, and those bishops never lack a laity who are willing to go along with them. So if a certain regional church has a heretical or schismatic bishop and the laity is in agreement with him, then must the pope forbear from interfering until he receives an appeal for help from that regional church?
