Papal candidates and the EF

Hi everyone,

So I’ve been looking around, and I haven’t necessarily gotten a straight answer one way or another. What are the opinions of the papable candidates about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite? I’ve heard that Cardinal Francis Arinze is very friendly towards the EF. However, the good man is over 80, so I’m unsure what his chances would be at becoming the next pope.

What’s the opinion of Cardinals Turkson, Tagle, Ouellet, Scola, etc?

Nota bene: I of course am only limiting this to the papable candidates - remember, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla wouldn’t have been on this list of papable in 1978. 😉
 
I’m not much worried about it. I don’t think the EF communities have really been much dependent on the person of Pope Benedict. We got SP from him and we appreciate that, but his person hasn’t been a rallying point for the EF communities. So I am not much concerned about the new Pope re: EF.

Nevertheless, if a Cardinal-turned-Pope is very supportive of the EF, then perhaps we can see an increase in interest on both the global-Vatican level and the local-diocesan level.

I also asked out of honest curiosity; the more we know about our Cardinals, the better!
 
Mgr. Ouellet has been friendly to the EF in his archdiocese (Quebec). He invited the FSSP to locate in the archdiocese and donated a church to them so they would have a permanent home, and apparently it’s turned into a thriving community.

I also hear he loves Gregorian chant which is near and dear to me 😃

Exactly! I enjoy knowing how politicians and popes feel about agenda that are near and dear to my heart!
 
11 of the cardinal-electors have celebrated the EF personally, and a few more have been friendly to it. I know Cardinal DiNardo of Galveston-Houston donated some land to establish an FSSP personal parish.

I wouldn’t hold your breath on Ranjith getting anything. The cardinal-electorate is dominated by curial officials, who detest Ranjith from his time there.

Why do you think they dislike Cardinal Ranjith?

Perhaps someone could enlighten us as to why Cardinal Burke isn’t being mentioned by the “pundits?” Is it because he is the Vatican equivalent of the SCOTUS Chief Justice, or is it something else? Personally, I think he is marvelous and his theology is top knotch as is, obviously, his knowledge of canon law. He is very sympathetic to the EF, very supportive of Opus Dei and would probably get the SSPX reconciled.

Gee, maybe I just listed the reasons why he isn’t papabile:blush:

This! 👍 Both of these men would make wonderful Popes, but I doubt either of them will get elected. I’ve heard (out of the “papabile candidates”) that Cardinal Ouellet is friendly towards tradition, but I would not put Cardinal Arinze on this list. Simply Google ‘Cardinal Arinze Latin Mass’, and you’ll see what I mean. Besides, I think the last conclave was his best shot of being elected as he is now over 80.

On the other hand Cardinal Arinze was very favourable to the project of an antiphonary for the Liturgy of the Hours in Gregorian chant, “Les Heures Grégoriennes”. He wrote a lovely foreword in the antiphonary and was a driving force behind its creation, and is a magnificent work.

Interesting. I recently read the transcript of an interview with him and he took a somewhat negative position. When asked about the Holy Father’s suggestion that all parishes would benefit from the EF, or something to that effect, he poo-pooed it saying that the one parish in all of his diocese was more than adequate to the meet the needs of those interested in the older form. He didn’t come off as “friendly” to me to be honest.
 
I love Cardinal Arinze as well, though I’m not that familiar with his attitude toward the EF Mass, specifically. But I think it’s moot because even though he looks to be in very good shape, we know that the papacy is a crushingly demanding job, and a younger, healthy man will last longer doing it.

That would be awesome if there would be an increase in the EF.
