Papal candidates and the EF

Interesting. I recently read the transcript of an interview with him and he took a somewhat negative position. When asked about the Holy Father’s suggestion that all parishes would benefit from the EF, or something to that effect, he poo-pooed it saying that the one parish in all of his diocese was more than adequate to the meet the needs of those interested in the older form. He didn’t come off as “friendly” to me to be honest.
Quebec City is a small city with good transit, so for the city itself he is no doubt correct. The rest of the archdiocese is very rural and spread out. Logistically and realistically, it would be tough to add the EF as most parishes are lucky enough to have one Sunday Mass, with the priest having to drive to multiple parishes on Saturday and Sunday.

I don’t think he was being “unfriendly”. Merely realistic.

I wouid be a bit more pragmatic about it. How did the papabile feel and act towards the Extraordinary Form prior to the Holy Father displaying a positive attitude towards it? That is the important question. Lets remember how they reacted to Papal desires is one thing. How they will do in the absence of such wishes. Could be completely different.

👍 Well argued and soundly logical, Mike.

You would be further ahead, I think, requiring all new Priests to know sufficient Latin and to be able to perform the EF. One of the problems that has been pointed out is not simply the lack of demand, but that so few Priests are actually skilled in offering it.

Why do you think they dislike Cardinal Ranjith?
Thank you,
God bless.
Supposedly Ranjith’s style is very blunt and aggressive, and his liturgical sensibilities are reactionary (for instance, he has made some noise about suppressing the OF, and has ordered that communion is to be received only kneeling and on the tongue in his diocese).

I’d heard too that his assignment to Colombo was tell-tale promoveatur ut amoveatur but, as he’s still a curial official, I doubt that.

I seriously doubt that a former secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and DIscipline of the Sacraments has “made some noise about supressing the OF.” He is indeed a friend of tradition and the EF Mass, but has also praised the use of the vernacular to some degree. His views are not dissmilar to those of Pope Benedict. Do you have any specifics from a reliable source?

Perhaps someone could enlighten us as to why Cardinal Burke isn’t being mentioned by the “pundits?” Is it because he is the Vatican equivalent of the SCOTUS Chief Justice, or is it something else? Personally, I think he is marvelous and his theology is top knotch as is, obviously, his knowledge of canon law. He is very sympathetic to the EF, very supportive of Opus Dei and would probably get the SSPX reconciled.

Gee, maybe I just listed the reasons why he isn’t papabile:blush:
Because he’s an American. The Cardinals are wary of a Superpower Pope. Rightly or not, they do not want another Avignon scenario.

I would seriously doubt that any American, specifically United States, Cardinal would be given much consideration if any. The Church in the US is not really that well respected in the rest of the world, and I would have to imagine that the US Bishops are held accountable for that whether rightly or wrongly. many parts of the Church in the United States are seen as being totally out of control and bordering on heresy in some instances. The lack of action in many cases on the part of the Bishops would I think weigh heavily on the minds of the electors.

I could be wrong, but thats how I see it.

However, this current Church state relations in the US look more like those behind the iron curtain than they do Avignon.
