I had earlier asked for papal encyclicals on women and I received a wonderful response from some people. I want to thank them once again. This time I’m looking for papal encyclicals (talks, homilies, etc. are also welcome) on men. Being a man myself, I want to understand the nature and role of the Catholic man.

I’ll start you off with this one:

Redemptoris Custos (Guardian of the Redeemer) - This is John Paul II’s Apostolic Exhortation on St. Joseph from August 15, 1989. Of course, St. Joseph is always a great model for us men (and I like his name ;)).

I’ll try to see what else I can find.

I created a page to organize the popes’ general audiences on men, which includes a section of “Related Church Documents” in which I’ve listed several relevant encyclicals:

Many of the audiences and documents are using “man” in the generic sense to apply to both men and women. It should still apply, though. 🙂

Pope John Paul II gave 129 general audiences (I don’t think they are technically encyclicals) which comprise his teachings on Theology of the Body. They The content really blows my mind and I think it gets at the heart of what you are asking. This theology is not specifically geared towards men, but it teaches how we as people created in God’s image are to regard our bodies and puts our relationships with others in the context of God’s plan for us. Here is the list of his lectures:

I am currently teaching the version of Theology of the Body geared for teens by Jason and Crystallina Evert, and it does address your question and much more. It’s not a short answer to your question by any means, but in my opinion a very rewarding one. Christopher West is a great resource to learn more about this as well:

I apologize if this sort of scope isn’t what you were asking for; it’s made a huge difference in my life in terms of me understanding my true manhood, so I wanted to suggest it.
