Papal Infallibility throughout 2000 years?

It has been said that throughout 2000 years the Pope has never taught error. I vaguely recall Patrick Madrid, and others, I’m sure, give some examples of when a Pope was about to proclaim something that was definitely contrary to Faith and Morals of the Church, that Pope, in fact, died before he was able to do so.

Does someone know Church History well enough to point out some specific examples of this?

Not especially. I think it’s an interesting topic that few Catholics know much about and it’s a good aspect of apologetics to look at. I think if a protestant asks s Catholic what is so special about the Catholic Church, it’s a good thing to know about.
 
Perhaps this thread won’t gain any traction, but I think it’s quite interesting to look at in understanding something special about the Church and it’s applicability for how we are to view things in the present moment as Catholics.
 
another question follows,can anyone stop the pope from teaching error?? if so, then the council becomes the highest authority.

Well its pretty much a tautological proposition really isn’t it?
Do flat-earthers today (yes they are alive and well) teach error? Their followers do not believe so and have many plausible reasons to explain away the alleged inconsistencies and alleged incontrovertible evidence we bring to their attention.

The fact is when it comes to history its very difficult to mount incontrovertible evidence either way.
So it comes down to credulity. We born and bred Catholics can be very credulous when it comes to the topic of Papal infallibility it seems.
