Papal infallibility

No. Papal Infallibility is the protection of the Holy Spirit, keeping the Pope from teaching error when he defines an issue of faith or morals. So it depends on what is said in the encyclical. Even encyclicals like Munificentissimus Deus or Ineffabilis Deus (which defined the Assumption and Immaculate Conception) are protected only in the paragraphs where he states “we define…xyz dogma.”

Just a word of caution, don’t fall into the trap that because what a Pope says doesn’t “technically” meet the criteria for infallibility, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t grant what he says your faithful assent. He’s still authoritative and the visible head of Christ’s Church and have theological reason to rely on his teaching. :o

If you want to read more on what Papal Infallibility is, see Vatican I, session 4, chapter 4.

I’m absolutely with it on what it is and that I should give faithful assent to what he asks of us. I just asked because in Caritas In Veritate, it seems that Pope Benedict doesn’t understand the truth about unions here in the U.S. I’m not sure how many people know this, but the Davis-Bacon Act was actually discriminatory toward black non-union construction workers coming up from the south to the north to take government contracts. Today, once states pass right to work laws, union membership drops dramatically. For example, in Indiana union membership went from 50,000 to 1,000. The reason is that people would like to keep more of their paycheck rather than have their dues go toward frivolous spending, liberal activism, and Democratic contributions during elections.

Very good. I guess I really am in full agreement with the Church (as I should be). Perhaps I read it wrong, so I’ll go back and reread. I was worried that I might have to change my stance on unions.

Even so, it seems that a lot of companies have figured out that in order to be successful they need to treat their workers well. Maybe unions are no longer needed here in the US??? Only time will tell.
