**This statement is basically false, no matter where you got it.

FWIW, 3000 people were executed during the 300 years activity of the Spanish Inquisition. That’s about 10 a year.

Since 1976, when the Supreme Court declared that capital punishment was lawful, 1,136 were put to death between then and January 2009. That’s 34 a year.

Think about it.**

Gotchya. But was the main reason for the Roman inquisition heresy? or what was the reason behind it? Maybe i can correct the person properly next time i hear it

**Get the book CHARACTERS OF THE INQUISITION by Thomas Walsh. It will tell you what you want to know, and put a lot of the lies of the Black Legend to rest.

One tidbit he mentioned that was repeated on a program about the Inquisition on the History Channel: Common criminals frequently claimed to be heretics, as the jails of the Inquisition had more humane conditions.**
 
Thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut and responses regardless of my mistake in posting in the wrong forum. It has been helpful, and clarifying, and as more questions arise, i will post them. As for now i have some good sources/books to go to and enough information to chew on for the time being.

OK, that’s pretty vague. I would ask them:
"Can you please give some specifics such as dates, names and locations? Specifically what was the activity of the pope in this? "
I would also ask them for primary evidence that each of these things that they are accusing of actually happened.

I shall next time i hear it. Chances are, they wont know. As most people who spread falsities do not know, but is merely hearsay

And don’t forget the name or names of the particular pope/s involved and how he or they were.
